^^ that's an interesting post Greg; I guess it's down to however you wish to express your interest in music and grow your collection and knowledge.
Personally I have never been one for lists, so I struggle when people talk about their favourite albums from a specific year... I have to dig around on PA, constantly asking myself 'was that one from 1978 or 9?' Its much easier when members put a list up of albums from a year for me to vote on, because I can just accept they are right! When it comes to ratings, I have frankly never given a rat's ass whether something should be a 4.2 or 4.3 out of 5; for those who like these kinds of things, fine... knock yourself out, but for me, I either like it or I don't... it either speaks to me more than their previous releases or less.. end of. Yes, I rate things on PA, which is pretty easy, because most things get a 3 or 4 star, but there have been literally hundreds of albums I've heard which are on PA, which I've never gotten around to give a rating to. As such, Mike's site, which I'm sure is very impressive, is the sort of thing that leaves me completely uninterested. When a member says 'choose your fave from these 10', I'll make a choice, but ask me next month and it could be something different, purely because I feel in the mood for that one at the time! I've never taken part in Album of the year, purely because there will only be a couple of albums that I will have heard... for instance in 2024, the only album I got around to hear was Focus 12. The rest of the time, I spend my time reacquainting myself with stuff I forgot to rate back in 2005 when I joined!!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Wow, this site is running so slow for me and has been since yesterday... Takes a long time to open pages especially when logged-in.
^ Thanks Jared, I'm much with you on the rating thing (or I might say the over-rating thing. I prefer it simpler, more loosey-goosey. That's not fun for me). I'm not into doing that, especially when it is so fine-tuned -- it's enough that I like it, love it, find it mediocre, find it horrible. Mike's site does come across to me as treating it much more like a precise science than I would. It's art appreciation and I don't wish to "otherthink" my appreciation. Analysing that which I enjoy can lead to me not enjoying it. That happened to me with Film Studies, reviewing music and film can take away the joy of it. I like to "experience" it. I like to focus on much I love, that which I am passionate about, and that quantity of love may be in in flux depending on the day and mood. Avestin got me into participating in the Album of the Year events with lots of encouragement and recommendations. Some years I participate, some I don't. Over the past few years I have been listening to more contemporary music than previously. I have heard three albums in full for 2025 so far. I still discover new-to-me acts and albums from the past 60+ years. Although I do appreciate seeing the ratings of others (mostly cumulative which affects the chart rankings and can help me when looking into an artist's discography), especially at RateYourMusic, which has been my main resource for researching and discovering albums over the past few years, I have not been rating albums in years. I have done a few reviews with ratings in the past decade. I rated a lot at PA when the quick rating feature came out. I'm interested in charts even if I am not so interested to add to them often myself and have looked at many charts for the years, especially the albums charts at rateyourmusic and at Prog Archives. I do prefer rateyourmusic for that, but that's also because my tastes are not as focused on the music we have in PA as we find with many members at this site. So much of what I love and excites me is not in PA but also I do find a lot of it progressive in its own way. But again, I digress. Edited by Logan - 2 hours 2 minutes ago at 07:28 |

Outstanding List. Adding a bit more, so we have a good idea what the old SPR shows were about, which included all these things listed and ,,, more!!! One of the nicest things, is seeing these listed ... but even better, is, that I even have copies of shows by Guy Guden (Space Pirate Radio) where all of these were featured at various times, and in many cases, like TD and KS, things were played in their ENTIRETY! Guy has a copy of all these shows, and only he can distribute them, as desired, though he has not done so in the past. I like these lists, however, the sad side of it, is that there really was not, in those days, a location where these were played almost exclusively, so seeing them "survive" and being remembered, is special, even in my heart, and I (generally) do not like lists. And the credit gors to Guy, for having put up with so much during that time, to fight for all this stuff to get an ear, or two! Adding some more to your neat list!!! NOTE: When you see the list for that many hours, you can get the feeling for the hardcore dedication to (not only) the new music, but also, what was (at the time) imports! Thus the timing of their release would not exactly be correct! 1974 (added material listing from the 9 shows that survived - about 30+ hours) Edgar Broughton Band - Oora 10CC - Sheet Music PFM - The World Became The World Nektar - Remember the Future Capability Brown - Voice Ash Ra Tempel - Join Inn Amon Duul - Psychedelic Underground Rare Bird - All That I Need Kayak - See See The Sun Sparks - Kimono MY House Focus - Hamburger Concerto Stoneground - Bad News Sweet Smoke - Live Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs Roger Ruskin Spear - Unusual Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets Incredible String Band - Hard Rope, Silken Twine Alice Bowie - Singles Edgar Froese - Aqua Cosmic Couriers - Galactic Supermarket GTO's - GTO's Esperanto - Dance Macabre Tomita - Snowflakes are Dancing Faust - So Far Quatermass - First Third Ear Band - Alchemy Jefferson Airplane - Bark Principal Edwards - Round One Seventh Wave - Things to Come Fripp and Eno - No Pussyfooting Ash Ra Tempel - Gilles Zeitchieff Ron Geesin - Music From The Body Amon Duul 2 - Dance of the Lemmings Plus - Seven Deadly Sins Aphrodite's Child - It's 5 O'Clock Caravan - And the New Sinfonia Jean Yves Labat - M. Frogg Can - Future Days George Harrison - Lectroni Sounds Ash Ra Tempel - Starring Rosi Supertramp - Crime of the Century Manfred Mann's Earth Band - The Good Earth Todd Rundgren - Utopia Firesign Theater - Everything You Know Is Wong Jane - Here We Are Paul McCartney - Ram Vivian Stanshall - Men Opening Umbrellas PFM - Cook Carmen - Fandangos in Space Gryphon - Midnight Mushrumps Garry Moore Band - Grinding The Stone 1975 (listing from 8 shows that survived. About 30 hours. Also includes some of the above as needed) Amon Duul 2 - Wolf City White Noise - Electric Storm in Hell Second Hand - Death May Be Your Santa Claus Kraftwerk - Autobhan Le Orme - In Concerto Amon Duul 2 - Hijack Hawkwind - Hall Of The Mountain Grill Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain Can - Movies Tasavallan Presidenti - First Le Orme - Felona e Serona Brainticket - Celestial Ocean Walter Wegmuller - Tarot Ash Ra Tempel - Schwingungen Ange - Le Cemetiere des Harlequins Steve Hillage - Fish Rising Cosmic Couriers - Planeten Sit-In Le Orme - Uomo di Piazza Ange - Au Dela Du Delire Popol Vuh - Selifpreisung Banco - First 4 Karat Gold - All Bums Le Orme - Collage Ange - Caricatures Khan - Space Shanti Darryl Way's Wolf - Night Music Aqua Fragile - Mass Media Stars Banco - Darwin Ramases - Glass Top Coffin Grobbschnitt - Solar Music Amon Duul 2 - Made in Germany Vangelis - Earth Reale Academie de Musica Gong - Angel's Egg .... IF anything, you can see how a show put on so much, to the point that a listing makes me drool ... and so many of the shows on the Internet, are not as open minded and experimental as this show was, and still is, though I think Guy is (likely) not well, these days. His spirit, if the show is over, is ridiculously insane, and I apologize for mentioning it so many times, but greatness needs to be appreciated, specially in a place like PA.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
