Do you remember?

SMITHS:

HOUSEMARTINS:

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

The Smiths, especially when combined with Sandie Shaw. Smile

The Smiths. I went through a phase in thee late 80s when I was a really big fan and listened to them all the time. Some of their music is simply beautiful and getting away from the singles that most people are familiar with (often described as depressing) many of the album tracks are some of the best music I've heard. Johnny Marr is a fantastic guitarist too. I still listen to their music even now.

I admire Paul Heaton greatly and quite liked The Housemartins and later The Beautiful South, but as a band The Housemartins are not in the same league as The Smiths IMO.

The funny thing is, I wasn't that keen on The Smiths back in their 1980's heyday, but I'm a big fan of them now, mainly thanks to Sandie Shaw. Smile

If you had asked me back in the day, I would have stated Smiths unequivocally.

However, as I have got older, I have found Moz more and more tiresome, especially in recent years.

The Housemartins were a fun band, and I still listen occasionally, so they get my vote.

The Smiths, all the way.

I got into The Smiths in the late 80's, and I still listen regularly. I never really understood the view that they were depressing. Many of their songs were pretty upbeat and uplifting, and their lyrics witty and funny. Marr is an excellent, and very original guitarist, and Morrissey a great lyricist (even if he is a tiresome pr!ck these days)

I have the Housemartins debut but haven't listened for years. They were fun, and I quite liked the Beautiful South, but the HM lacked the depth of the Smiths.

If I was to list my top ten bands of all time, from any genre, The Smiths would probably be in there.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

^ I can only presume The Smiths were labelled a depressing band due to their hit song : "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" Smile
