Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Not surprised to see Close to the Edge leading this by so far (I see the vast majority who voted have not posted, not a very good sign for a discussion forum) but I just gave King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic another vote. While it was at one time, it's not my favourite from KC. I prefer Lizard and various others from the classic era.
I would say that I infamously hold Yes' Close to the Edge in quite low esteem, but I recognise that I am nowhere near significant enough to say that of myself. I actually like the title track of CttE, and quite like "And You and I" but "Siberian Khatru" ended up letting down the whole album for me. Nothing I hate on the album, but it never really clicked with me or enthralled me. I compare it to another three track album like Bubu's Anabelas and it is left so very wanting by comparison (okay, a gratuitous comparison). Close to the Edge is an album that various others consider to be the greatest masterpiece of the 20th century and yet to me is lacklustre. I think of it as a Prog 101 type album, but not one of the masterclass. I think that Magma and King Crimson and others were putting out more interesting music at the time, but different strokes for different folks. that wa ssome nasty rambling. Larks' easily for me. that said, I have only heard half of the albums in this poll. I have not heard Bruford's Gradually Going Tornado or Bill Bruford's Earthworks's A Part, and Yet Apart. I only heard Bruford's much lauded One of a Kind for the first time in full in recent years. My ignorance of various of the classics of PA (especially the modern classics) can be seen as quite shameful as one person told me for someone who has been here as long as I have an as active in this community as I have been. My ignorance there is bettered my my ignorance when it comes to music theory... :) Edited by Logan - February 15 2025 at 09:56 |

This is pretty much the impossible choice! Picked Larks' just because CTTE gets all the votes here, but really, how could you favor one over the other?

I went with Larks' for the same reason. I could go either way but CTTE is already ahead by far.

I wanted so bad to vote GGT, I truly love it. The vocals are not a deterrent for me. I find them charming and straight forward, with a hint of Lake/Wetton.
But I can't deny the brilliance or genre-defining of CTTE.
