Finished The Penguin, excellent!! 9/10
Carry On (Netflix) surprisingly very good. 8/10 Children's Train (Netflix), got better as it progressed, enjoyable. Kids aside the acting was just ok. 7/10 |

A Quiet Place Day One 2024
This is the third in the franchise and does not feature either John Krasinski or Emily Blunt (although Krasinski co-wrote the screenplay) who appear in the other 2. This does exactly what it says on the tin. One moment all is normal in NYC, next it's complete carnage but because, perhaps, they don't have a big Hollywood budget for a load of CGI, instead it centres on one or 2 characters a la The Walking Dead. It's very good with faces I'm not familiar with plus a very clever cat! 7/10

Movies watched over the festive season:
Heretic - A horror movie with Hugh Grant. A great start but went downhill a bit later on. 2 young religious girls get trapped by an anti-religious nutter in his house during a storm. Worth a watch though 7/10 Little Bone Lodge - 2 criminals seek refuge at a remote Scottish property where a mother and her daughter live with the disabled husband. It heads in a totally unexpected direction and the twist is a good one. Nicely acted and some decent jumps near the end. Recommended 8/10 Gladiator II - I wasn't overly fond of the original despite it's positive reviews. This one isn't great tbh. The action scenes are decent but it's way, way too long and the story is quite weak (I could never watch something this long and drab in a cinema). The 2 Emperors were the best thing in it. 4/10

Conclave - Not the type of film we normally watch but this one turned out to be quite good. After the death of the Pope all the Cardinals meet up to select a new one - hence the movie's title. A great cast and a good story made the 2 hours fly by. It's full of twists and turns with an ending that no one could ever foresee and a real jaw-dropping moment. 8/10

^ Would like to watch Conclave at some point.
I watched a few 2024 film review shows online and it seems The Substance is getting the plaudits (watch out for the shock Oscar that could be coming Demi Moore's way!). Not seen it myself but can't wait. Sounds intriguing. On the other side of the coin Madame Webb would probably get the worst film of the year award if such a thing existed (or does it? ''The Razzies'' maybe?). Again can't say much as I've not seen it (and probably won't!).

The Substance is good - maybe not as shocking as some places make out though.
Last night we watched Elevation - Anthony Mackie and the gorgeous Morena Baccarin star. Nasty beasties appear out of nowhere and kill only humans. From the revealing title these nasties can't go any higher than 8,000ft. So 3 years later all the surviving humans live up in the mountains until, one day, our hero has to venture down to Boulder, Colorado to get medication for his ailing son. It's not too bad actually and there are some very tense scenes but ultimately there is nothing new here. Kills 90 minutes though and there is a hell of a lot worse - 7/10 |

Immaculate 2024
I have to admit I watch too many of these 'throw away' horror films and at 90 minutes this was never going to be a classic! Stars Sidney Sweeney as a US girl who decides to become a nun in an Italian convent (as presumably such things don't exist in the USA?!) and quickly wishes she had stayed at home. It delivers some decent shocks and a satisfying enough conclusion. 7/10 (but to be taken with a large pinch of salt!)

Adelheid - 8/10
Best movie I've seen in at least 2 years.. Despite my neighbor and her loud assed muffler going on for an hour.. I had to take a break (play drums to block out the sound) which usually is a hindrance to a movie, but I couldn't take it anymore.. I had this on my IMDB watch-list... along with 2,000 others. Don't remember ever even reading the title. I did a Search on here and found 0 results. Less than 1,000 votes on IMDB but it's on Criterion. I need more movies like this. Contemporary dramas about people that stand on their own, ones you can't compare. |
