A-Z of Japanese Symphonic Prog & Neo Prog

MAGDALENA      Glorious classically-inspired Symphonic Prog with operatic soprano Megumi Tokuhisa (Japan's answer to Kate Bush) raising the rafters. All of the lyrics are in Japanese, but that only adds to  Magdalena's oriental charm. Domo arigato. Smile

MANDRAKE     Mandrake's roots are located firmly in the 1970's, but their two volumes of raw archive material weren't released until 20 years later in 1997, by which time it appeared Symphonic Prog had had its day, especially if you happened to be a fan of Genesis. On the other hand though, if you were a fan of YES in the mid-90's, their best years were still to come. Wink

A low-key classic. If Megumi Tokuhisa is Japan's Kate Bush, their answer to Ann Wilson (with shades of Haslam) is Hiroko Nagai of Pageant (one of my favorite Japanese groups).

I've had a quick preview of Pageant and they sound great, so I'm looking forward to hearing them in full sometime soon. Thumbs Up

I live in a quiet village, so there's no danger of being interrupted by noisy townsfolk around here. Tongue

With a name like Magical Circle Guru Guru, I would think of some psychedelic and folky Krautrock Indo-Prog/Raga Rock band.

The jazzy German Krautrock outfit did come to mind when I saw the name Guru Guru. Smile

MIDAS      It takes some degree of audacity to title a recording "International Popular Album" before anyone's even heard it, but this is a Symphonic Prog band with the Midas touch! Smile

NEGASPHERE      One of the most obscure Neo Prog bands in the far eastern hemisphere, which could be a major Disadvantage in gaining any recognition in the western hemisphere. Confused

NOVELA      Not a Renaissance tribute band, despite the name, and despite all four members later going on to form the band Scheherazade. There has to be a Renaissance connection there somewhere. Tongue

OUTER LIMITS      Do not attempt to adjust your stereo. There is nothing wrong with the sound. They are controlling transmission. If they wish to make it louder, they will bring up the volume. If they wish to make it softer, they will tune it to a whisper..... From satellites to stromatolites and from violins to Mellotrons now, we're venturing into the marvellous, neo-classical orbit of Outer Limits. They're out of this world! Smile

Was thinking a lot about this band recently. While they had an extensive influence on the local scene, and mainly some VGM composers like Sakuraba, I don't think that their style was ever properly emulated by any other act.
I mean there are both Symphonic and Neoclassical bands out there, but Outer Limits handsomely combines the two branches (with the neoclassical sound actually properly having orchestral elements), and adds the odd more technical rhythmic features of the modern tradition on top.
Apparently they've made an EP (?) after STROMATOLITE called Time Stranger, which I could not find anywhere:

Most of their older demos (like the 1982 version of The Scene of Pale Blue) were re-issued in the 2006 edition of Marionette's Lament, but same cannot be said about the new stuff. As far as I know, promotional stuff such as the Organ Works was never re-issued in any kind of form.
One song by the name of Discoloured Ice managed to evade the plight of obscurity. A live performance of it can be found on Youtube, and it has also appeared in a compilation album called Jap's Progre by YggrDrasill Records.

A-Z of Japanese Symphonic Prog & Neo Prog

PAGEANT      Some of the most delightful music you'll ever hear in the wonderful world of Japanese  Prog! Pageant's three beautiful albums are jam-packed with more rich splendour and glorious jubilation than the Trooping of the Colour and Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March combined. They're the gold standard of  what other far better-known Symphonic Prog bands could only aspire to in the 1980's, not just in Japan, but around the whole world. It's time now to find the nearest charity shop to dump by 1980's Genesis albums. Tongue

One of the best prog rock bands to ever come out of Japan. Hiroko Nagai's vocals are heavenly.
