Thanks. I suppose I could read one of the half dozen links that keep coming up on google explaining the ending

The Pez was a relic. I was thinking the guy in the flashback may have been Quinn? Not sure--I didn't read the books. It was a fun cliffhanger episode though.

Silo Season 2
Finally got round to watching the final 2 episodes after the last dropped on Friday. Maybe lacking the mystery and intrigue of Season 1 as we now know the important fact about the surface. However most of the occupants of the silo don't so that is perhaps the 'fun' aspect. Naturally we are left with another cliff hanger as well as a very odd flashback at the very end, the point of which escapes me. This is still a solid 8/10 even if it's not on the level of Babylon 5 (or Star Trek TOS, Firefly etc) or even Fallout which was the standout sci-fi show of 2024 for me. I am a sucker for an apocalypse drama. BTW Seasons 3 and 4 are being filmed back to back so you can get invested in this knowing more is to come.

North Shore Season 1
Aussie made series starring Joanne Froggatt as a British minister trying to negotiate a trade deal with her Australian counterpart but who then suffers a personal tragedy while in Australia. A police detective played by John Bradley (of Game Of Thrones fame) comes over from the UK to assist in the related crime investigation. I liked the way it meshed a soap type drama with a crime drama, even managing to shoe horn in some political intrigue along the way. The characters are well drawn and it has some sharp dialogue. Enjoyable 'throw away' stuff with an ending that suggests a further season could be in the offing. 7/10

Silo - season 2 Meh. It's okay, but it doesn't slay me. I wish I could find a Sci-Fi experience I enjoy as thoroughly as Babylon 5. Great story, dialogue, politics, humor, and few games. The closest I've come lately is The Expanse, but even that show lacked the personality of G'Kar and Londo.

Ahsoka
The Star Wars universe continues its microcosmic exploration, this time a young Master Jedi (Rosario Dawson) trained by Anakin Skywalker before he turned to the Dark Side takes on a difficult but determined apprentice as they search for an Imperial Grand Admiral thought long dead. Good pacing and likeable characters comprise Dave Filoni's contribution to Lucas's vast galaxy of myth, adventure, mystery and magic. |

Disclaimer An interesting miniseries about a sexual crime as seen from different perspectives. I think it falls short of being hugely compelling or masterful, but it is worth seeing. I am long past the age where I would drool over actresses' looks, but this show features the lovely Aussie actress Leila George. Very beautiful and a great actress too.

Landman
Drama about the oil industry written by Taylor Sheridan and meant ( I presume) to be a long term replacement for his much loved other Paramount TV show Yellowstone which has now finished. So instead of Kevin Costner we get Bill Bob Thornton and instead of cowboys we get the 'fixer' type characters that are looking to expand the oil business into areas that are more problematic. In this case, Thornton's character gets in the cross hairs of the Mexican drug cartels who believe they run things in southern Texas. Mostly it veers wildly between very serious violent scenes and a lot of very awkward random humor. Also stars Jon Hamm (as an oil magnate) and Ali Larter as Thornton's beautiful ex wife. Highly entertaining but not as yet matching up to Yellowstone. However I like Billy Bob Thornton a lot and would virtually watch anything he is in. 7/10

Playing Nice 2025
A baby-swap drama filmed over 4 episodes with an impressive cast including James Norton and Jessica Brown Findlay. Quite tense stuff perhaps descending a little bit into melodrama for the finale. Based on a book that was set in London they decided to film it in Cornwall so at least you get some nice scenery if the drama isn't engaging you! 7/10

Horizon-Chapter 1 (Netflix): Excellent. Several stories going on during the 3 hour show. Looking forward to more.
Missing You: I think 5-6 episodes filmed in UK. Another winner, great drama.

Firefly was classic and has almost gone on to achieve mythological status (as a result?!). I liked Colony a lot with actors from Lost, The Walking Dead and the Mentalist finding a new home. It seems always that sc-fi gets this treatment more than other genres. Even Star Trek (the original series) was cut by the studio because they didn't think it was viable

Yep, Halt and Catch was so involving that the characters became like real people to the viewer, and we were heavily invested. I'm surprised that show didn't catch on more than it did given the historical aspect about computing. I saw Shogun also and was lost at times--never read the book--but I was blown away by the presentation. It just looked amazing. I think the Colony cancel was as egregious as Firefly. They had just gotten it to this really exciting cliffhanger where the lead dude was about to go up to the alien ship, after all the buildup, and then nothing....

Shogun 2024 10 episodes
I expected it to rival Fallout as my favourite show of 2024 but in the end it fell a tiny bit short. I felt they messed up the last few episodes as it became too unclear in terms of what was happening plot wise and that reduced the tension for me. Also way too much ritual suicide so it all became just a bit too repititive. On the plus side there is a ton of period detail and the lead Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada (as the ''Shogun'') is regarded as one of Japan's very best. He is also well known for appearing in the sci-fi shows Helix, Extant and Westworld. I enjoyed it and would put in my top ten for 2024 for sure. 8.5/10

A lot of shows I absolutely love on that list. The spin offs from Power are also good (especially the one with Tommy) and well worth a look. Halt and Catch Fire is probably my favourite. I cried buckets at the ending. Talking of early cancellation, sci fi channel series Dark Matter (not to be confused with the recent Apple TV series of the same name although that is also great) was meant to go 5 seasons (not the 3 it got). Still seething over that one. |

Cross Season 1 8 episodes
An entry for crime drama of the year, this is predominantly a cast of black actors and focuses on police detective Alex Cross who specialises in profiling serial killers. I thought the acting was as good as anything I've seen for a long while and found the story tense and gripping. I even cried a bit watching the season finale and generally love things that grab me emotionally. Look forward to future seasons. 8/10

Dune: Prophecy Season 1 6 episodes
Pleased they get away from the all the sand in the films! This focuses on 'The Sisterhood' and stars Olivia Williams and Emily Watson as 2 actual sisters who run a religious sect alongside Mark Strong's Emperor. Generally I enjoyed the acting and it all looked very impressive and is very well filmed (well it's HBO!). 9/10 |
