Nobody classifies The Cult as a punk band or that album you mention as punk. So... 

On RYM, this album is tagged as Post-Punk and Gothic Rock, both considered Punk sub-genres, and that's good enough to me.


Gothic rock and punk have nothing much in common anymore. Post-punk was already distancing themselves from the 70s punk already. 

RYM also classifies the album as neo-psychedelia which is wrong, because the music does not have such sounds. 

There is already some hard rock in there. 

edit: having just listened to the album (forgot how good it was), I still say this album does not belong in any kind of punk list.

I've lamented that the topics have become rather boring, predictable and repetitive (especially those coming from myself) but I rather love the idea of a topic where we mention what we can't stand of other members music interests. Only for those people who are cool with such things, and could find it fun, as some get more easily offended than others.

I would not do it as I am still a moderator here (even if a bad one) and I could see that leading to problems. So actually no. I am happy to be someone who loves lots of punky and poppy music, and punk and pop related music. I love lots of Post-Punk, lots of art/avant punk and art/avant pop.... Lots of punk and pop is in my wheelhouse.

Variety is the spice of life. I respect those who can respect a wide diversity of tastes, try to keep an open mind and ears, don't judge and dismiss too quickly or too easily...

^ As a starting point for my own entire list, I had decided to use RYM's Punk definition because I see some good reason in it. So it's not about my own idea and feelings of true Punk because that was formed in the late 1970s after hearing some British Punk Rock and not least Sex Pistols.

You do as you please. Personally I don't see the point of not trusting one's ears every once in a while. There's just no way The Cult - Love is punk, even in the slightest. It looks silly seeing it mentioned here.

Not as Punk but, as one of several other tags, as Proto-Punk, which I've seen many other places, for instance in this book

Not as Punk but as Proto-Punk, which I've seen many other places, for instance in this book

They give the definition of the punk genre and as example of albums they give Velvet Underground. I disagree. A lot of garage rock bands influenced punk and even psychedelia, but they were not punk. 
Proto-punk is a retrospective term that helps point out the music that lead to the birth of what would become punk as a genre. Sorry to state the obvious here...
