Santana had a knack for that too - making songs sound like their own and improving on the original IMO - in particular 'Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen', 'She's Not There', and possibly also 'Going Home'.

i think it was a good cover since the band GHOST does a lot of satire on taboo subjects like Genesis did in their time. I listen to Genesis' version more but when I hear Ghost's version I still enjoy it.

Steve Hillage totally blistering it with his space-rock-style cover of It's All Too Much, a classic acid-rock song by The Beatles that first dropped on their 1969 soundtrack for the Yellow Submarine flick.

It seems, though, that members of what would later become Yes, as well as Keith Emerson, were not so enthusiastic about the original of Paul Simon's song as they actually appreciated already a cover of 'America' done by Scottish keyboardist Billy Ritchie, who performed the song in the repertoire of his progressive trio called 1-2-3 (later renamed into Clouds) at the Swinging London club scene, where they became a sort of underground attraction with their original style. For instance, Pete Townshend, remembering those times, once said that 1966-1967 gigs of 1-2-3 were more interesting to him than Pink Floyd at the same time period.
