    Posted: November 28 2024 at 11:38
Ennio Morricone is by far the most prolific movie music composer of all time and with an epic score for A Fistful of Dollars that was almost as legendary as The Man with No Name - and that was just the beginning of an extraordinary career. Morricone wrote the music for all three of the sprawling spaghetti westerns in "The Dollars Trilogy" - directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood - as well as scoring the three magnificent movies in Leone's "Once Upon a Time" trilogy. The Wild West portrayed by Sergio Leone was a harsh, violent place without mercy, where people are shot in the back and torturers laugh out loud. It's a brutal man's world where women are oppressed and there is no possible love story for the hero. In a remote western town without pity, the sun burns down, the clothes are filthy, the men are unshaven and enemies await around every corner to deliver a bullet between the eyes.....

The Ultimate Ennio Morricone Experience from Arena de Verona, Italy, with The Movie Music Maestro conducting a full orchestra and choir back in 2002. Hug

I adore Ennio Morricone (RIP) and was obsessed with his music especially in the early to mid 2010s. I do especially like his 60s through 70s period, but I also find much music of value that comes later, and was impressed with his 2015 soundtrack for Tarantino's the Hateful Eight.

I have many albums by him, but here are a few favourite pieces of mine (showing The Kill Bill scene cause I love it).. I would like to list 20 more.

While I generally am not that keen on Westerns, the HBO Westworld TV series aside :), I do like various Sergio Leone films and love Morricone's music of that period. I love so many of his soundtracks, but I guess i were to choose just one right now then it might be Maddalena (1971) or Una lucertola con la pelle di donna (1971).

Cataloguing Ennio Morricone's vast discography of 470 soundtrack albums may be the ultimate challenge - although I've "only" managed to find 270 soundtracks on YouTube so far - but here's a brief Top 20 rundown of some of Morricone's best-known soundtracks for starters - which is a bit more manageable. Smile

                  1966: The Battle of Algiers
                  1966: Navajo Joe
                  1967: Death Rides a Horse
1968: Once Upon a Time in the West
                  1968: Guns for San Sebastian
                  1969: The Sicilian Clan
1970: Two Mules for Sister Sara
1971: A Fistful of Dynamite (Aka. Duck, You Sucker!)
                  1973: My Name is Nobody
                  1978: Days of Heaven
                  1981: The Professional
                  1982: The Thing
1984: Once Upon a Time in America
                  1986: The Mission
                  1987: The Untouchables
                  1988: Cinema Paradiso
                  1988: Frantic
                  1989: Casualties of War

YouTube links and ratings to follow.....

A master of the art of film soundtrack.....that cat brings movies to life!  The Mission was a beautiful film mainly in how the music highlighted the amazing natural landscapes.....yes, the acting and a compelling story helped but without Morricone's score, the film would never have reached the heights it did, which you can say for most every movie his music embellished.
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

I think the soundtracks featuring vocalese singing always add an extra-special touch to the Morricone magic, especially when it's performed Live! Thumbs Up

^ Yeah, I'd always assumed the music to The Thing was by John Carpenter until very recently, especially bearing in mind it has haunting echoes of Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 soundtrack. Clown

Hi,

To get a really good idea what made Ennio good and appreciated ... you got to see the film ENNIO put together by Giuseppe Tornatore ... and the number of people guesting on the film is crazy, but seeing Ennio explain how he found so many moments in film ... is tops ... totally priceless, and on par with another great film that shows the talent behind the art ... VISION OF LIGHT about cinematographers, is a revelation that will tell you more about many directors than you and I can possibly imagine.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

001.3 stars 1961: Ennio Morricone - The Fascist (Il Federale) (soundtrack) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkAUJkbhd-Riy1FmnI0OgjnYG-Z8x7S1H

Il Federale (The Fascist) is the very first full-length feature film scored by Ennio Morricone. Il Federale is a comedy-drama directed by Luciano Salce, in a film reflecting how Italian political leaders are as changeable as the weather. By the way, that's not James Mason in uniform on the movie poster, but keep a look-out for the "dirty old man" lookalike of Albert Steptoe. Smile

002.4 stars 1962: Ennio Morricone - Crazy Desire (La Voglia Matta) (soundtrack) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mJowYYnqiHXu7sCKly-4yb0nTx_jOcPSU

My Crazy Desire for the lovely music of Ennio Morricone continues with his second soundtrack, a love story directed by Luciano Salce in which a 39-year-old man falls in love with a 15-year-old girl (Catherine Spaak) - a controversial film whose theme of an illicit love affair would no doubt appeal to Woody Allen and Bill Wyman. Unsurprisingly, La Voglia Matta was initially banned by Italian film censors until several cuts were made. Embarrassed

If you listen to Pastures of Plenty below, you can hear clear hints of Morricone's marvellous spaghetti western themes still to come. Smile

Il Successo is Ennio Morricone's first jazz score in a movie directed by Mauro Morassi. It's an Italian "comedy", so don't expect to be rolling around the floor with laughter. Tongue

005. 4 stars 1963: Ennio Morricone - Gunfight at Red Sands (Duello nel Texas) (soundtrack) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkAUJkbhd-RgKyXjk0Y-NbFSf0dAklqAV

The Law of the Gunfighter

Keep your hand on your gun,
Don't you trust anyone,
There's just one kind of man that you can trust,
That's a dead man.

Be the first one to fire,
Every man is a liar,
There's just one kind of man who tells the truth,
That's a dead man! Ouch

006. 4 stars 1963: Ennio Morricone - The Basilisks (I Basilischi) (soundtrack) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDmdF1ma6cZqaE6YPo2yIwV-98gjlUZ_D

It's not what you think.... The Basilisks is a comedy-drama about the lives of three privileged young people residing in a typical provincial Italian town, but don't expect much in the way of laughs, even if you're fluent in Italian. A nice soundtrack though. Smile

007. 5 stars 1964: Ennio Morricone - A Fistful of Dollars (soundtrack) - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL29CB9EB6D82EEC70

A Fistful of Dollars      Originally titled "The Magnificent Stranger", this is the legendary movie that changed westerns forever, being the first film in "The Dollars Trilogy" and the first collaboration between Ennio Morricone and director Sergio Leone. A Fistful of Dollars featured a new harsh realism, where the Wild West is portrayed as a violent place where the women are oppressed and the men are shabbily dressed.  It's a sun-bleached place without mercy where a gunfighter is just as likely to get a bullet between the eyes for cheating at cards as he is for insulting a stranger's mule - especially if that stranger happens to be Clint Eastwood. Ouch
