Actually it looks like it was pretty close. Wink https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=114398

not that i would expect you to like it, but this was maybe my first favourite ELO songs when I was a child (my eldest brother was into ELO)

"Mission (A World Record)" off a New World Record.

I heard quite a bit of ELO back in the '90s while at university. My neighbor hung out with us, and he had the big box set. I know they've a very dedicated fan base, but I could never get into them.

ItHS isn't "bad" so much as it's not memorable. It feels like a band going through the paces, a band that we expect so much more from. But I wouldn't say it's necessarily worse than the 3 record that Emerson and Palmer did with Robert Berry.

ELP have been my favourite band since I was 14 (before that Queen perhaps). Only needed to see Keith Emerson doing 'things' to an organ and I was hooked. ELP made the keyboard sexy and made prog something that could be put on a stage alongside Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. They were as heavy as hell and in the 70's were even called 'Heavy Metal' as strange as that seems now. No shrinking violets and the only so called 'Supergroup' not to immediately implode of that era. They were everything rock music was about but could play classical, jazz and folk music. Unbelievable band but here is the rub.. they should have stopped in 1974. Their reputation and importance and legacy would have been protected. They carried on too long. Remember it was just the 3 of them. No one else. They couldn't change that but why would they?

ELO were a very different animal and even early ELO with Roy Wood is totally different to the later commercial AOR version of the band. They were constantly on the radio in the seventies and tunes like Livin Thing and Mr Blue Sky were and still are great. ELP couldn't write a catchy tune to save their life. But they were not ELP. Were the 2 bands intersected was in massive over the top live production and both released a double album withing months of each other in 1977. If I was voting for a choice betwen Works Vol One and Out Of The Blue then I would go for the latter, but as far as bands go, ELP every day of the week and twice on Sundays!

I like and dislike albums from both bands. Also very different musically, very apples and oranges.

ELO is up there with ABBA and The Carpenters as one of my favorite commercial pop/rock groups of all time. ELP hurts my ears - and I don't mean that as a compliment.

Interesting, i have not thought that ELP was good beyond its first few albums. I would say that ELO's 1974 work is much better than ELP with the late 70s works, but then I also prefer ts earlier albums to those of ELP. I appreciate ELP's debut the most, and used to like trilogy very much.

I guess it's a matter of personal taste. In any case, both band have their own merits, and deserve credit for their work.

it's interesting to try to understand why someone believes something of course, not just I like something better than another, and I do like getting into specific reasoning, and that's the joy of conversation.

I just had not thought that ELP would be much respected after its first four albums with Brain Salad Surgery (1973) even among many of its fans of the first four albums. Not saying you would be wrong to, of course.

I think it's a very limited strong run of albums and a huge number of bands bettered it. I do think that's one of the reasons why ELP is not as well respected as some of its fans think it deserves. There are so, so many that I think had longer and better runs in PA. I'm reminded that I did a topic not that long ago where I did the top 12 albums of various bands and someone was offended that I did not for Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Not only could I not do that because I don't know enough albums, but I would not have thought that Emerson, Lake and Palmer 12 albums that I thought would be well-respected at this forum . I would have only counted four, and I don;t like that many ELP albums. Frankly, that's a reason why I find ELP overrated, it's that air of expectation, but then fans tend to overrated. I have grown to loathe ELP and we all have our biases. As long as we recognise that they are biases, and you did with saying "in my book" which I hugely appreciate.

Might be interesting to see a poll pitting the post 1973 albums from the 1970s by ELO and ELP and only voting if you know the albums by both bands reasonably well. I could not vote yet as I have only heard bits and pieces of the ELP albums below and just those first three by ELO (could be those thirst three by both).

Works Volume 1 (1977)
Works Volume 2 (1977)
Love Beach (1978)

Eldorado (1974)
Face the Music
A New World Record (1976)
Out of the Blue (1977)
Discover (1979)

For me, from what I know, ELP peaked with the debut. Mind you, even with a beloved-by-me band like Magma (who means much more to me than ELP and ELO) that 1970 double-album debut is the most special to me.

has to be ELP for me.... have their albums up to Works II.

ELO, I have their first 4, but Face The Music just went too poppy for me. Love their debut though.
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I tend to listen to more ELO than I do ELP, thus voted accordingly. Love both bands, but they're quite different from each other and thus depends more so on the mood. I never leave the house without my multiplication tables and a box of band-aids.
