Sade, by far. Diamond Life is a classic.

I have more albums by The Beautiful South than any other artist in this poll, although that's mainly because their CD's keep turning up in charity shops.

The Blue Nile's A Walk Across the Rooftops is one of the greatest debut albums by anyone ever. It usually takes a few albums for a band to find its sound, but the entire package was there in full for The Blue Nile.
Their sound? Imagine a mix of Brian Eno, Steve Winwood, and Frank Sinatra with occasional touches of U2 and Simple Minds thrown in for good measure. Which is in no way to imply they are derivative, because absolutely nobody else sounds just like them. Sure, they've inspired some copycats since 1983, but I've yet to hear anyone else that's come close.
