Shogun (the recent one)  I was skeptical about this recent series matching the most excellent original from 1980 with Richard Chamberlain, but I was very impressed. Great acting, screenplay, and sets and special effects. The recent Shogun has some important differences in the plot compared to the original, and they pull things off quite professionally. Loved it.

The Listeners 2024 (4 episodes)

A teacher is suddenly plagued by strange sounds that no one else can hear. The low rating on IMDB of 5.4 may be down to the ending not being tied up in a nice neat bow. I liked it despite that, it's well acted and very well written going into areas I wasn't expecting. 8/10

Recommend From on MGM+.....crazy weird horror,   and Evil is also great with Michael Emerson playing a goofy acolyte of Satan.

Yellowstone is coming to an end currently with a few episodes left to air. It's being 'replaced' by Landman starring Billy Bob Thornton which has just started up, and is about the US oil industry. Thornton plays a 'fixer' type character who is forced to do some occasionally dangerous high paid work in order to pay the alimony for his divorce from his beautiful ex wife (played by the still impossibly good looking Ali Larter). It's a lot of fun and worth checking out based on the 2 episodes I've watch so far.

Yes I wonder why the 2nd season is called the terror. But I will watch it. This Virgin River is pretty good. It starts back up in a few weeks. I have yet to watch Yellowstone but I probably will.

The Terror

A fictionalized account of the Franklin expedition in search of the Northwest passage.

The ships Terror and Erebus get stuck in the ice and are forced to stay put for two years with 100 or so men.
Their tinned food was sealed with lead and they all get lead poisoning. Many go sick and insane from it.
A mutant killer polar bear is one of the many problems they face. ends in cannabalism and murder.
Horribly well done 10 episodes.

A Man on the Inside

Netflix comedy consists of 8 half hour episodes. Ted Danson is a retired college professor who is hired by a private investigator to look into a possible crime at a retirement community by posing as a new resident. A great performance by Danson. The show covers the issues faced by seniors such as loneliness, memory loss, illness, and death. Touching and funny with a good supporting cast. I eatched it all in one night. The case is solved with the possibility of another season with a different case.

After The Party (6 episodes)

Aussie made limited series drama that focuses on an important issue (won't say as it's a spoiler until you get into it). Extremely fine acting from Robyn Malcom and Peter Mullan. Interesting and powerful 9/10

Curfew 6 episodes

The idea is that after a speight of attacks on women by men, the UK government decides to instigate a curfew on men being out after 7pm. They are tagged like prisoners and if they violate curfew are commiting a crime. Sounds outlandish but it's a clever idea unfortunately let down by not so good writing, based on a book apparently. Probably needed more than 6 episodes but it seems Paramount had this down for a one series thing. Generally they have not been successful with this sort of stuff, their UK productions falling well short of their quality US shows such as Yellowstone, Landman and Tulsa King. 6/10

Baptiste   Season Two

Sober drama about immigrants in Budapest and how they interact with nationals and British citizens. A spinoff of The Missing from 2014, it follows French ex-detective Julien Baptiste after a brain operation and the Dutch police who enlist him to resume his work in order to help solve a sex-trafficking case which leads to a mysterious group of anti-immigrant terrorists.   Unusual for a BBC series in its hard-edged realism and stark look at societal pressures involving non-native residents and the resentments that develop.

Sunny Season 1

Starring the rather wonderful Rashida Jones, Sunny is the name of a homebot and explores ideas of AI exhibiting human like intelligence. Filmed on location in Japan, it never seems to know whether it wants to be a philisophical piece or a comedy thriller. It manages not to be both in the process and is actually overly nasty at times for me. At time of writing it's not clear whether it will get to Season 2. 6/10

The Great Season 3

This is the brilliant Tony McNamara written show about a young Catherine The Great (as played by Elle Fanning) and also starring Nicholas Hoult as ''Peter''.  It's way off the scale as a historical period drama, mostly not interested in actual facts and all the more fun for it. I notice that is not being renewed for a 4th season and that is mostly because it is so expensive to show the true oppulence of the royalty of the day. The last season is the weakest of the 3 but still rates at least 7/10. (8/10 for the whole series)

Tulsa King Season 2 (10 episodes)

Easy going charm from Sly Stallone as a New York gangster finding himself in Tulsa after doing 'time'. It's a whole lot of fun and not to be taken too seriously. The fact they recruited some great actors for this series including Dana Delany, Neal McDonough and Frank Grillo is a measure of its success. 9/10
