I think Assault On Precinct 13 has the best soundtrack as well. Smile

Gotta be Escape from NY from a purely creative stance.   Halloween, Christine and The Thing also excellent.

The Thing, because it's the scariest.  However, I love Halloween, In the Mouth of Madness, and They Live.

The Thing is a masterpiece of horror and gets my vote -- might have thought it would be too gruesome/gross for you, Paul. I had a dream about it recently.

I do have a very soft spot for Escape From New York and is the kind of popcorn movie I can play over and over. Love the "Doo... doo doo doo... doo doo doo doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo doo..." music. Just reading it as a series of doos is iconic. ;) And then when it moves to ""Doo doo doo doo dood oo etc.", magic. :p

Listening to it is even even better than reading the score above.

Great score but my fave from it is 'Everyone's coming to New York' in the old abandoned theater --

"This is Hell, this is Fate,
But now this is your world and it's great!
So rejoice, pop a cork...
Buddy, every-one's coming to New York! New York!

^ Dark Star is a film that I have struggled to get through.

Love that.

By the way, Escape from L.A. was such a pastiche of the basic concept. Such a silly film, but rather fun, surfing on a tsunami and all.

The Thing. It's worth watching the DVD 'making of' documentary that comes with it. The guy that was originally drafted in to do the effects had a break down it was so difficult. The cast were massively on edge trying to cope without any home comforts and filming in Alaska ( a deliberate decision by Carpenter for that reason!). It helps to create a certain tension that you never ever see in modern horror films. Certainly a top 10 film of all time for me but I do love this particular sci-fi/horror crossover genre.

^ ^ It was a disappointment though I figured as much.

Watching EfNY now--

Voted for In the Mouth of Madness. It is in my top three when it comes to horror films.
