Loot (2 seasons)

If you are fed up with dark psychological dramas and are looking for a light comedy then check this one out. Arguably Apple TV does these better than anyone nowadays. Netflix had the much loved Schitt's Creek but that is done. There is Ted Lasso but that's been on semi permanent hiatus and there is the excellent Shrinking, but this is better in my view. It is primarily written for Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids) and she is brilliant but there are other great characters to enjoy as well. Always a nice pick me up and it has been renewed for a third season. 8/10

Disclaimer

A dark psychological drama based on the novel by Renee Knight and directed by Alfonso Cuaron ( I hadn't realised until I looked it up that he wrote the screenplay for Children of Men and Gravity). It's slow to get going and hard to grasp what it's about until episode 3. I then binged the rest of the 4 episodes over the weekend. The main cast is very strong including Cate Blanchett, Keven Kline and Sacha Baron Cohen (yes he of Borat and Ali G). 8/10

Nautilus

This is weird one in that it has come onto Amazon Prime without any fanfare. Digging deeper it was made by Disney and is one of the most expensive TV series ever shot in Australia. The Nautilus is (of course) the submarine in Jules Verne Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, captained by Nemo and his bunch of renegades. This historical piece set in British Empire times impressed me with the amount of detail and how good it looks. Also lots of heart and very well cast. I liked it a lot and binged all 10 episodes in about a week, in what was an especially bad week as well after I quit my job of 30 years. This distracted me in the best possible way. 9/10

Industry Season 1
3rd season has just been put out and is gaining interest. This is set in a fictional bank called 'Pierpoint' that is part of the London banking sector and concentrates mainly on a trio of young grads trying to make their way 'on the floor'. It's depressing and interesting in equal measures. Entirely believable. 7/10

Andor

Dystopic and thoroughly mature, Andor is a departure from the typical Star Wars adjunct in its somber atmosphere, taking place on the heels of the Empire's takeover of the capital planet Coruscant and the gradual usurpation of the galaxy.   It follows young Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) in his struggle to find his sister, his realization that the evils of Emperor Palpatine's military domination will not be defeated without a fight, and the sacrifices required for active resistance.   As a new & tiny Rebel Alliance begins to form, trust is sparse and heroism is a rare commodity.   

Season Two is scheduled for 2025, takes place just before Rogue One & Episode IV, promises to be equally well-written and run by creator Tony Gilroy and features a truly outstanding international cast including Stellan Skarsgård, Fiona Shaw, Genevieve O'Reilly, and Faye Marsay.   Recommended.

My brother has been telling me to try Apple TV; it's about time I do. I have wanted to watch Foundation; loved the novels. Thanks for the recommendation, I do now plan to watch it. For one thing I love Peter Capaldi. He was a magnificent Doctor (my fave of the modern Doctors), amazing character in Torchwood, and Malcolm Tucker is such a "great" character. Ah, I wish he and Moffat had stayed longer with Doctor Who. And Jessica Raine has a Doctor Who connection.

I did start on a new series with Prime called The Feed. Rather too soap opera-y to me. Always seem to like David Thewlis, who is in it (another of my favourite actors).

I like weird, depending on the weird. Weird is how people would describe many of my tastes. I adore Twin Peaks, and my wife stopped watching it for getting too weird.

I enjoyed The Feed. I think it has been around a while and wasn't made by Amazon Prime originally but I could be wrong.( just checked and Season 1 was first aired in 2019 but seems no plans for a second season as it wasn't that succesfull)

Finished Season 2 of The Devils Hour. It follows on perfectly from Season 1. I liked it but at only 5 episodes could do with more! Interestingly they have already shot Season 3 and Raine describes Season 2 as just a 'bridge'. 

EDIT Oh and also I noted Steven Moffat lurking on the credits!

^ If you do get Apple TV, Severance is an absolute must watch - brilliant (second series starts Jan 25). Silo is great too.

On Amazon Prime are you watching The Devils Hour? This could be right up your street. First season was a bit weird but the second has just started and it's brilliant (so far). It stars Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine who are both great in it.

I felt the same about that last episode but was looking forward to Season 2. The show was renewed but now it's cancelled due to the ongoing writer and actor strikes. Amazon didn't want to wait the time to get the next season, which would have been 2025 at best.


That's a pity, I liked it too. Instead no doubt Amazon are pushing on with that horrible Richard Madden thing (forgotten the name its so bad).


I don't regularly have Prime, and I just finished The Peripheral. I thought the acting was a bit spotty and over-the-top sometimes, but I really liked this series. Unfortunately I had not realised that it had been cancelled (due to the strikes, despite having been renewed before that) until after I was halfway into it. So the last episode, which did feel a bit rushed ended on a very unsatisfying note. Such a shame, it's been one of the sci-fi series that I have most enjoyed over the past few years. I think that I will now read the book that it's based on now by Gibson.

So many series I love with cliffhangers/loose rends got cancelled or were not renewed. I wish they would have plan in place in advance to finish up the story otherwise you've kind of wasted the viewers time. In this case I think they did and you can't foresee everything. It's not easy doing a production like this, there are sets to consider, actors and others other commitments.... For a while I favoured mini-series/ limited series. 1899 (Netflix, 2022) is another I hoped would continue.

^ one for you maybe, Mexican film director Alfonso Cuaron has made a TV series called Disclaimer starring Kevin Kline and Cate Blanchett. I'm struggling to follow it, just baffling!

The Killing Kind
This psychological drama is as good as anything I've seen in the genre for a while. Emma Appleton taking the lead is a new face to me but Colin Morgan will be familiar for playing Merlin in the 00's BBC drama. Lots of twists and turns and constantly kept me guessing. 8/10

I did get to watch this in the end partly on my sisters recommendation but also I do like Sam Neil a lot (he's also in an Aussie drama called The Twelve which is worth catching)

I binged the last 5 episodes over one evening so quite enjoyed it. The ending is something of a cop out though and I wonder if that is how it was in the book. Not terrible but probably could have been punchier. Nevertheless I would go slightly higher with 6.5/10.

Now onto Joan starring Sophie Turner of GOT. Only watched the first episode but it's very intriguing stuff. Set in the 80's it's about a young mother trying to get away from an abusive husband as well as making her way in the world. She decides that the uncoventional way might the best it seems.

Michael Douglas scores a late career high with his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin (one of America's founding fathers and a successful and accomplished diplomat/policitician but never to become president). This deals with his attempt to forge an alliance between America and France in order to help fight British rule. It's almost entirely set in Paris and features a superb cast of top French and British actors as well as Douglas himself in the lead role. I found it especially interesting in capturing the mega rich and their opulent Parisienne lifestyles of the day. 8/10

Finished Nightsleeper yesterday (well early hours of the morning actually!). It's brilliantly written and the cast (inc Joe Cole, James Cosmo, Sharon Rooney, Alexandra Roach and the wonderful David Threlfall especially) do a great job. Even at times some great humour and a hugely ironic but satisfying twist at the very end. It's quite a ride! 9/10
