Topic: a Noob Needs recommendations Posted: June 24 2005 at 10:28 |
Hello everyone, I've just register here for some recommendations of Prog metal bands.
oh, Who am I? I'm justa 17-yearold nerd in Bangkok,Thailand (well i guess you guys know where my country is). A brief introduction to my lovely city, Bangkok is.. in one word, URBAN! it's not full of rice fields 'n garden with people riding elephants (as some foreigners think, haha) and we Thais do have considerable access to Internet, and also kinds of imported musics.
(for folks who'd like a detailed essay on Thailand maybe u can email me, just kidding lol )
ah, did that sound like bragging? honestly I didn't mean to. well, back to prog stuff,
Currently I know just ONE prog band (DT, ofcourse, and love it) and would like to know some more goodies in this category.
Well, I'm surely not [yet] hardcore fan of any kind of music. But I do like bands like
DT, Metallica, and uhh.. rammstein
I love technical style and deep feelings of DT, Powerful yet Elegant.
and I just noticed 20 minutes ago that there are lots more good prog bands mentioned here.
Oh and one more question, Where are you guys from? are there many prog fans in your city?
I ask you this because in thailand there are so FEW prog fans! reasons are that there are not many Thais who 're interested in English and most can barely use it, And even less Metal fans!
Well, Nice to meet you!!
Oh god, sorry for posting in the wrong forum , i should posted in 'Welcome newbies' eh?
i've a bad habit of skipping forum rules.

Right now, everyone hates DT because DT's new album monopolized discussion for a long time.
Anyway, I recommend you get James LaBrie's Elements Of Persuasion album, it's a nice mix of DT and Metallica styles.
Also, anything by Symphony X, Shadow Gallery, or Enchant. If
you're feeling adventurous, try Opeth, Pain Of Salvation, Ayreon, The
Mars Volta, or later King Crimson on for a try...
...but if you want to hear other music that's even more amazing than
Dream Theater and its prog-metal ilk, and are ready to step into a
different box completely, just ask, and I'm sure that many of us here
would be glad to help you.

You guys don't wanna scare him off...
He says the only prog band he knows is DT... why not show him
other prog bands, and ease him into the older stuff?

the 'seminal' prog bands are generally considered something like this
- Genesis
- Yes
- ELP
after that try these
- Pink Floyd
- Van der Graaf Generator
- Jethro Tull
- King Crimson
- Gentle Giant
- Camel
- Renaissance
okay sorry, I'm not really into prog-metal (at all) but thats the cream of the prog crop.

Ok...here are some specific albums I would get:
Genesis - Foxtrot; A Trick of the Tail; Selling England by the Pound
Yes - Close to the Edge
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Pink Floyd - Meddle; Animals
Rush - A Farewell to Kings; Hemispheres
Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts; Godbluff; Still Life
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear; Clutching at Straws
IQ - Tales from the Lush Attic; Seventh House; Dark Matter
Ok...that's enough for now.

I don't think you people GET it. Maybe felona,
but not the rest of you. I know you're trying to do him a favor,
but you're likely going to turn him off from this if you do it in the
wrong way.
He's like "I like Dream Theater, and Metallica, and other metal
bands." He's stressed his metal roots multiple times, and
mentioned that DT is the only prog band he knows. And you're all
like "LOL try some Yes and Genesis!!!111!!1" Yes and Genesis are
excellent, I agree, but all in due time. If this metalhead here
listens to Yes, he's most likely gonna be like "...riiiiiight."
If he does some prog metal, explores *their* roots, he might find his
way to Yes and have the experience to understand the context of it and
enjoy it. As is, you're all being a bit too assumptuous...
don't turn this guy off from prog. There's
plenty of bands in the Archives that could lead him in quite nicely, no
need to suggest classic symphonic prog to "help him along" when he's
plainly stated his only prog experience is through DT, and that he
likes metal. Sheesh, guys.

That's why I tend to steer clear of threads like this unless the person
asking for recommendations is interested in symph, jazzy prog or
general weirdness. Prog metal isn't my forte.

Well, in that case, I would try Symphony X - actually all of their albums are good, but particularly V. Or try Fates Warning - I would start with A Pleasant Shade of Gray. For some metal mixed with some great keyboard work try Erik Norlander - Music Machine. Is that better?

Oh, and I think Rush - A Farewell to Kings or Hemispheres fit in nicely with the prog metal genre. You might also try 2112 or Caress of Steel as well.

Here are some albums, You'd like:
Symphony X- The Odyssey ( Not too Neo-Classical, don't want to scare you off)
Enchant- too light for him right now.
Try Rush- A Farewell To Kings, then Hemispheres Kind of a transition to Progressive Rock, but also keeping that Progresive Metal root
More albums:
Kamelot- The Black Halo
Pain Of Salvation- The Perfect Element (Perfect )
Fates Warning- A Pleasant Shade of Gray
and oh why not:
Queensryche- Operation: Mindcrime
Really good albums you must have:
Pain Of Salvation- BE
Ayreon- The Human Equation
