When Anathema announced an indefinite hiatus on 22nd September 2020, due in part to the financial burdens of a lengthy career that had failed somewhat to live up to expectations in commercial terms, it was a crying shame, but also totally understandable. It always seemed likely, however, that the two remaining founding brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh would eventually make new music again, and 2024 has seen them both emerge from their semi-retirement with new projects. Vincent's new art-rock project 'The Radicant' released a debut 5-track EP called 'We Ascend' earlier this year, but the debut album by Daniel Cavanagh's 'Weather Systems' (also the name of one of his former band's most acclaimed albums), called 'Ocean Without A Shore' is probably the closest thing that Anathema fans will get to a continuation of that band's at least temporarily halted career. The album is made up of new versions of songs that were originally intended to form the next Anathema album anyway, since in 2019 Daniel began writing what he thought would become the basis of the next Anathema offering, and to finally bring the album to fruition, he teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Daniel Cardoso, who played drums on the two most recent Anathema albums 'Distant Satellites' and 'The Optimist'. The 'Ocean Without A Shore' album was released on September 27th via Music Theories Recordings (part of the Mascot Label Group). While Vincent's 'The Radicant' project leans more towards the experimental and abstract side of prog, Danny has chosen to continue focusing primarily on the sound that Anathema migrated towards during its later years, whilst at times also paying tribute to the past. He takes care of vocals, keys, piano, guitars, bass, vocoder and programming, whilst Daniel Cardoso looks after drums and production. The album also features the guest vocalists Soraia Silva, Petter Carlsen, Oliwia Krettek, and Paul Kearns. 'Ocean Without a Shore' can therefore be looked upon as a somewhat of a spiritual successor to Anathema's more modern sound, along with some hints here and there back to Danny Cavanagh's 2017 solo album titled 'Monochrome'. The music could be described as orchestrated rock, laced with electronica, progressive elements, vocal harmonies and celestial atmospheres. Note: I'm not able to find a photo which includes Daniel Cavanagh and Daniel Cardoso in the same frame at the moment, but if all else fails I'll put one together from two separate individual photos of them...Edit: Something like this maybe? 'Ocean Without a Shore' (2024) 1. Synaesthesia (9:11) 2. Do Angels Sing Like Rain? (5:06) 3. Untouchable Part 3 (5:55) 4. Ghost In The Machine (4:53) 5. Are You There? Part 2 (5:58) 6. Still Lake (5:58) 7. Take Me With You (6:09) 8. Ocean Without A Shore (7:17) 9. The Space Between Us (6:04) Total Time 56:31 - Daniel Cavanagh / vocals, electric and acoustic guitar, bass, keyboards, piano, electric piano, programming, vocoder, string arrangements - Daniel Cardoso / drums With: - Soraia Silva / vocals - Oliwia Krettek / vocals - Petter Carlsen / vocals - Paul Kearns / vocals 2 x Vinyl LP (coloured limited edition) Music Theories Recordings - MTR77341 (September 27 2024, Worldwide) CD Music Theories Recordings - MTR77342 (September 27 2024, Worldwide) Digital album September 27 2024 Full album as a playlist on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mvfz8AvHDIgCLjAXTsaKSLFB8Z0sKmWqk. Note: Anathema frontman Vincent Cavanagh also carried on the band's spirit in his own solo project 'The Radicant', whose debut EP 'We Ascend' was released on 12 July 2024 via Kscope. That EP was only 23 minutes of music, so not really enough to merit an evaluation for The Radicant's inclusion on PA as yet, but Vincent is currently in the studio working on his debut album as The Radicant, which is set for release sometime next year. His 'We Ascend' EP is recommended for fans of artist such as Radiohead (and also Thom Yorke), Anathema, Einar Solberg and Lunatic Soul. 'We Ascend' (EP, 2024) 1. We Ascend (5:44) 2. Zero Blue (NSS Mix) (3:18) 3. Anchor (3:39) 4. Wide Steppe (6:16) 5. Stowaway (4:37) Total Time 23:34 - Vincent Cavanagh / vocals, instruments, programming, artwork & design With: - Sarah Derat / vocals (1,5) - Amy Wood / vocals (4) - Daniel Cardoso / drums (2) Instruments, programming & mixing by Ténèbre Mastering by Sam John Vinyl 12" LP Kscope - KSCOPE1058 (July 12 2024, UK) Digital album July 12 2024 Edit: I'll move the section relating to Vincent Cavanagh's solo project 'The Radicant' to its own separate suggestion thread when the full album that he's currently working on becomes available sometime next year. I've included it here for now to allow folks to get acquainted with the project via the short 23-minute EP that's out at the moment. Edit 2: Added a possible band photo derived from separate individual photos of the two guys behind the project.
