I dislike their 1980 self titled version even more. I absolutely loved their Death Walks Behind You and In hearing Of albums; but the 1980 one didn't have a single song worth saving. Personally, I found VdGG to have gone downhill in this century and their 2 albums released this turn, though far from the worst, didn't endear me. The single worst record I have heard was when I chose Bridges to Babylon as my introduction to the Rolling Stones. I listened intently, hoping to find a glimmer of greatness but that album is usually considered one of the bad ones in their discography [after 'Dirty Work' usually].

Seems to be one of those albums fawned over by the critics along with Astral Weeks by Van Morrison and Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan that don't live up to the hype. (I don't have a dog in the fight as I don't listen to any of these guys)

^ I never could get into Beefheart... or Zappa for that matter... which probably means I don't earn my proghead badge.

Zappa is a whole genre in himself. Personally I'm not really a guitar man and gravitate towards more keyboard stuff although my fondness of the 3 piece band lead me to Rush and Muse who are obviously more guitar lead. I should probably whisper this but I also find Led Zep not very interesting.

There's nothing wrong in that. They don't really operate within your main fields of (musical) interest, do they? I'm a fan of Led Zeppelin because to me they have so many memorable songs, so many great riffs and grooves. I suppose I don't really find them particularly interesting either. They are just the best representation of Classic Rock that I can think of. I love them much like I love the even less interesting Thin Lizzy and Blue Öyster Cult. Anyway, back on topic: one of the worst albums I've ever bothered to listen to is Under Wraps by Jethro Tull. Last year I decided to find out why you all hate it so much. It did not dissapoint:) Of course I know there's even worse albums out there. I'm sure Katy Perry's latest is one of them. But I won't willingly listen through "the lowest scoring album on the review aggregation site Metacritic in 13 years" - by an artist I have no interest in. |

Yes I think you're right about Zappa being his own genre as he crosses over so many styles and genres, so is effectively unclassifiable. On a side note I think David Bowie and Kate Bush also live in their own genres, again for crossing over genres and styles, and being a massive influence on so many other musicians. |

Hi, This ought to tinkle your toes ... Led Zeppelin had more women fans in their shows than most rock bands. My girlfriend used to say that Led Zeppelin was "sexy" ... something the guys wouldn't say ... and it was sexy in the sense that it was presented with a very suggestive mode, that is more attractive to women than it is with men. Thus finding it not "interesting" is not surprising, I don't think, and you weren't the only one that felt that way ... For me, the music was outstanding, and more importantly, it added to the EXPRESSION in rock music that could get past the words and lyrics to be more meaningful and make it ... kinda real, instead of suggestive like so many rinky dinky lyrics in so many bands! In the arts, film, theater and literature, at the time, it was about being clear and "naked" with your words and work, and one could say that Led Zeppelin, had defined itself in this area very well, and they knew how to present it, which is what 3 out of 4 bands can not do! If there ever was a bad album that I heard, I would say the one with the Groupies put together by Frank Zappa, was sad, and poor and totally disjointed, and it could have been more interesting, but I have a feeling that the women themselves were totally out there and impossible to work with in an artistic way that did not involve sex per se. I think the album would have been better if the sex side of it had not been cut out altogether, which made the girls sound like a bunch of pop junkies ... the sadder side of the whole business I would even say, specially when some other women did better, although seeing Pam becoming Miss Wonderful America is really ... sad ... in my book, and buries the truth even more! Like we didn't already know, but the album lacks a lot otherwise. BTW ... it's called The GTO's.

No, I feel the same these days... furthermore, I'd say that Zep, Sabbath, Purple and Heep haven't been very interesting to me for over 30 years now. I don't mind any of them, but I don't own their records or play them at home any longer. I wondered whether I'd played them to death by the time I was 21 and then switched off? Hard to explain why I dropped them, but took Yes, Genesis and Rush with me thru life's journey?

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Yeah, one man's worst album list is another man's buying list. I do like Jazz from Hell. I even also like Under Wraps (to go back to another nomination), although of course the drums are bad. I'd take that over Too Old To Rock'n Roll..., A, and War Child night and day.

Yeah, it's almost a reverse reference. If PP doesn't like it, we're likely to like it. In his list, there are some 15 albums I still own and still like (enough for Gnosis 9 or 10)
TBH,
I think Made In England is at least as good as In Hearing Of, but
N&G is rather weak... But it is still much better than anything done
afterwards. Edited by Sean Trane - September 27 2024 at 04:46 |

let's just stay above the moral melee

I don't know thing fish but what do you guys think of lumpy gravy? It's been a long time since I played it. I actually think it's good despite all the spoken word stuff (I actually happen to like spoken word to a point although he sort of pushes the limit on that one).

I enjoy both partly for their comedic aspect (though obv one being more dirty and risqué per se)...in fact, I think Thing Fish has more melodicism than LG

I think it was last year or the year before that I listened to Open Your Eyes by Yes for the first time and couldn't get through it.
