S is for Stupendous.
Here is a masterlist of some acts with albums that I have been into, and then I quickly chose 25 from the list that I am "felling' right now. Buffy Sainte-Marie * Salle Gaveau Samla Mammas Manna * Santana Konomi Sasaki Saturnia Satwa Karl Heinz Schäfer Klaus Schulze * Secret Chiefs 3 * The Sea Nymphs Yochk'o Seffer Semiramis Sensations' Fix * Willam Sheller * Shibusashirazu * Shining Hideo Shiraki The Shiver Shub-Niggurath * Jane Siberry Sigur Rós * Silver Apples A Silver Mt. Zion Simon & Garfunkel Nancy Sinatra Siouxsie and The Banshees * The Sisters of Mercy Skeleton Crew Skids Józef Skrzek Slapp Happy Slint Sloche The Smile * Patti Smith * Tim Smith The Smiths * Snakefinger Soft Machine * Solaris The Sound Soundgarden Spinal Tap Spirit Spiritualized® Spirogyra * Spookfish Sprain * Squid * St. Vincent * Simon Steensland Stereolab * Cat Stevens Sufjan Stevens * Karlheinz Stockhausen Stormy Six Strawbs Stringtronics * Sui Generis Sumo Susanne Sundfør * Supersister * Supertramp Swans * Sweep the Leg Johnny Sweet Trip David Sylvian * It is again missing various fairly popular Prog or possibly Prog choices like Spock's Beard and Symphony X both in the master list and poll and I opted to leave some popular names off, like Supertramp and Strawbs and Cat Stevens from the poll. If applicable, please choose three acts, or more, or less, from this poll of some of my favourites and please mention any of your own favourites. Note that not all are Prog in the poll or in the list but to me they have significant enough relations to be sufficiently relevant to a forum of Progressive rock enthusiasts. Sorry if you think my S Poll sub-standard on the whole, but then I do encourage people to mention their somewhat superior selections. ;) Just throwing in some S words of a fairly sivil (I mean civil) sort. Most everyone could do better per their own tastes. Here are the past polls: 25 "R" List Acts & 28 "P" List Acts & 27 "O" List Acts & 27 "N" List Acts & 25 "M" List Acts & 25 "L" List Acts & 25 "K" List Acts & 25 "I and J" List Acts & 25 "H" List Acts & 29 "G" List Acts & 26 "F" List Acts & 25 "E" List Acts & 26 "D" List Acts & 25 "C" List Acts & 25 "B" List Acts & 25 "A" List Acts |

Siouxsie and the Banshees for sure. They were one of the genius punk bands that came along in 1977 along with The Damned and The Stranglers. Israel, Peek a boo, Hong Kong Garden, Mirage, Christine etc. Way to good to be just a 'punk band'.

From your list, only Klaus Schulze... I have ticked Soft Machine, but I wish I could get into more of their discography... it will take time and dedication, I think.
otherwise... Spock's Beard, Sieges Even, Subsignal, Satellite, Sylvan, Seventh Wonder, Supertramp, Sky (first 3), Styx, Suspyre, Stream Of Passion, Shadow Gallery, Symph X, Spheric Universe Exp, & Shadowland...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I see far more than three voteworthy candidates here. No way am I not voting for David Sylvian and Swans, but for third vote I could consider Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens and Soft Machine, and Squid, Patti Smith, Siouxsie, Samla Mammas Manna, Sprain are also close.
Will go for Sigur Ros, but that could be different on a different day (actually today is rather a Soft Machine day, but they're sitting at 6 votes already).

Just quoting a few of the more recent posts, but George, great to see some recognition for Spiritualized... Saper, I'm also into Shorter, Sanders, and Gil Scott-Heron, who I introduced my son to for a school project (the Revolution Will Not be Televised), but he never takes my suggestions or wants my help with schoolwork which is a good thing actually. Lewian, your choices really speak to me out of a list of choices that speak to me. Jared, nice to see vote for Klaus, and I too really like Supertramp's first three. I have felt like the odd man out at PA for how much I like the debut (and I adore "Try Again" -- that feels quite Soft Machineish to me).
Thanks to all for their comments, and all would be worth quoting and responding to....
Sweet.
No William Shatner, but there is William Sheller. Even if joking, I actually do like various WIlliam Shatner music and his name did cross my mind. If I had any full albums of his I might have added him to the master list. Suicidal Tendencies was popular with some of the skate kids when I was in high school. And Clinical Depression for the win!
Such a great band. I'm a late-comer to really getting into Siouxsie and The Banshees,. There's one great reason why the 80s did not suck. Many more too of course. |
