Playlists representative of your tastes

I really like the idea, and I loved making mix tapes in the 90s. My big problem with them today: There's no time to listen to them 

This won't come as a surprise to some of you to learn that I have never made a mix tape (wouldn't know where to start, being a complete tech-phobe who doesn't own a mobile phone!)...

I kind of like the creativity (of a limited sort) of putting together collections in particular order that I have control over as the artists did not make the music for me, and sometimes it was the labels/producers who chose the order. It's the editor and curator in me. Sometimes there will be re-releases in different orders of albums. I mostly do listen to full albums and the playlist, say in the first post, is based on listening to full albums and then trying to pick a track from each that somehow particularly affected me or that I want to share with others who might be looking for a taste of an artist.

I find for a forum that sharing a track rather than a whole album can be an efficient way to delve into artists, one can hone that more to particular tastes and lead to some good conversations about very specific music. I got very into this with the Interactive series of poll where we would posts tracks on certain themes. I was not one of the more competent ones when it came to discussing the actual music, but I would always listen to everything posted and would try to share thoughts on the music commonly.

Mostly the playlists are just for my own enjoyment, but the choosing itself aspect I really enjoy. I loved making some series here where I chose a favourite track of mine from albums for each year from 1960 until now. I discovered more albums through the series as some years were relatively scant on releases of music that excite my current tastes.

A feeling I have wanted to rekindle since being at PA was when my friends and I would get together and share our music collections. Those would be full albums, but I find that more awkward when it comes to things we don't all know at PA on the whole. I have listened to a lot of full albums here for PA work, especially while on the Eclectic team.

I mostly stream music these days, and download. The medium is not that important to me, and I do find it useful using my Smart phone to listen to music (I have an iPhone), and my iPod Touch before that. I do still like to put on vinyl records, but CDs are not of much interest to me anymore.

Mike: I loved having a four year old daughter. That was a magical time. Enjoy it. They grow up so fast, it has seemed to me, too fast.

Anyway, useful to know if people at this forum are into doing such things (have the time and inclination). It's something I would like to do more of, but it is better if others have the same interest. Not into making blogs where I just do my own thing without interaction and participation.

Same here - I'm a compulsive albums listener. However a few years back on the site formerly known as Twitter I used to run a Sunday evening music presentation (in the style of a radio show) - usually 20 tracks with a common theme - mostly mainstream rock & pop, but lobbing in a few prog tracks whenever I could.
