FLAKE An Aussie Psych-Pop band from Sydney with an album that's as tasty as the crumbliest, flakiest chocolate you've ever tasted before. Sadly, Flake's bass player was forced to drop out before their first gig due to the fact that his father died, his house burned down, he split up with his girlfriend and he was called up for national service in the Army - all in the space of one week - which surely rivals Unlucky Alf for being the unluckiest man on the planet. FLAMING YOUTH Do You Remember Flaming Youth? No, not many people do, but that was Phil Collins' first band in the flowering of his youth at the tender age of 18. At Face Value, Flaming Youth were a good band and they should have been a big success, but such are the vagaries of the music business that Against All Odds the band never managed to achieve a commercial breakthrough and they broke up in 1970. Flaming Youth are now just a footnote in Genesis' history, but they did remain together long enough to record one flaming hot album, and here it is..... 1969: Flaming Youth - Ark 2 - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjlAupDY0gxFV-1HOBnbQX66waToo3AYv Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 25 2024 at 10:04 |

FLEUR DE LIS Let's go to to Copenhagen and wear flowers in our hair for this mysterious psychedelic gem, where you can have your Fleur de Lys cake and eat it too with icing on the top. Who cares if the lyrics are partly in Danish, which only adds to the mysticism and mystique of this cult classic. 1971: Fleur de Lis - Facing Morning - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2LgW3RJTgc |

FLIED EGG The Japanese Uriah Heep, brought to you by the legendary powerhouse trio of Shigeru Narumo (guitars, keyboards), Hiro Tsunoda (drums) and Masayoshi Takanaka (bass). Flied Egg emerged from the earlier outfit Strawberry Path, where Shigeru (the Japanese Steven Wilson of his day) is rumoured to have played keyboards, guitar and bass pedal all at the same time, and that's no yolk! Sayonara. 1972: Flied Egg - Dr. Siegel's Flied Egg Shooting Machine - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjNQc2pgZbs 1972: Flied Egg - Good Bye - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Rji_-NTWQw 1971: Strawberry Path - When the Raven Has Come to the Earth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffSpcGQqXEE Flied Egg "reunioned" at the Budokan, Tokyo in 1997 Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 29 2024 at 01:18 |

THE FLIES There was a bit of a buzz going around the London underground scene when British pop-psych band The Flies (formerly known as In-Sect and No Flies On Us But) first appeared, but they were soon swatted away, having not managed to stick around long enough to record a full album together,. The Flies did record a memorable single though - a cover version of "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" - which you can find on the Chocolate Soup for Diabetics compilation, for those with a sweet tooth. 1968: The Flies - Complete Collection - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoM62aCWfpE Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 30 2024 at 10:59 |

THE FLOATING OPERA A Psychedelic Rock band from Ann Arbor, Michigan, who took their name from an existentialist novel by American author John Barth which tells the nihilistic story of a protagonist who's contemplating suicide - the literary equivalent of listening to a Leonard Cohen album. Don't worry though, the music of The Floating Opera is far more uplifting than the gloomy book, despite the title of the first song on the album: Song of the Suicides. 1971: The Floating Opera - The Floating Opera - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGYcZTs8PzA |

FLORIAN GEYER Psychedelic Krautrock from an intrepid trio named after a legendary German knight of the early 16th Century. Florian Geyer was the Jean-Claude Van Damme of his day, having led the Peasants' Revolt with suitably heroic aplomb whilst no doubt delivering a sardonic one-liner or two along the way. 1976: Florian Geyer - Beggars Pride - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYOigXXdrEw Edited by Psychedelic Paul - September 01 2024 at 11:15 |

FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND One of the "Big Three" of Japanese psych - alongside Far East Family Band and Flied Egg - Flower Travellin' Band famously went nuclear with Hiroshima, but they also had a reputation to live down as the Japanese Black Sabbath - although they're not known to have bitten the heads off any bats. 1970: Flower Travellin' Band - Anywhere - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahxIUdM-eCI 1971: Flower Travellin' Band - Satori - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJbOK4YpeFUh-OTPlsN5Di9OpRqOdRISa 1972: Flower Travellin' Band - Made in Japan - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqFJ7yQpfCARY6PLSuYGVkhvKtKeRJIhy 1973: Flower Travellin' Band - Make Up - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nW-9dchyXXlnGzvIgIXj8CAC1fn7iyhaw 1975: Flower Travellin' Band - The Times - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lobtj45LxDMdWZIf4FHLLLD4GwsswDQBQ 1997: Flower Travellin' Band - From Pussies to Death in 10,000 Years of Freak Out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8IFaKF4dnQ 2008: Flower Travellin' Band - We Are Here - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lOmx-VC2eQ_ZhHQEhcdFpz8lq5y2_GuTc Edited by Psychedelic Paul - September 02 2024 at 07:30 |

FOOD BRAIN A veritable feast of Japanese psych, at least until the halfway point, where it gets seriously weird in an avant jazz kind of way, which is about as appetising as sushi. |

FORD THEATRE One of the "Big 4" of the "Bosstown Sound" in Boston, Massachusetts, alongside Beacon Street Union, Orpheus and Ultimate Spinach. Fort Theatre were regulars at the Boston Tea Party concert venue, which only existed for three years at the tail end of the 1960's and where it's probably not a good idea to order a cup of tea at the bar if you happened to be from England. 1968: Ford Theatre - Trilogy for the Masses - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mAnmDhMI6A5ZQhf-UfolDHfmDrDSrVWF0 1969: Ford Theatre - Time Changes - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mgENP1Zc4XBss-fX_j0IfeO2bwUhJacIY |

FORT MUDGE MEMORIAL DUMP Following on from Ford Theatre, It's a Beautiful Day for another Massachusetts band with the "Bosstown Sound", whose lead singer Caroline Stratton sounds not unlike Grace Slick, and with a male singer included upfront too, which gives Fort Mudge Memorial Dump a close affinity with the sound of Jefferson Airplane. Not the greatest album cover though. 1969: Fort Mudge Memorial Dump - Fort Mudge Memorial Dump - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=415_SvDbnz4 |

FRAGILE Not a YES tribute band, but a Psychedelic Rock band from Holland. Fragile by name, but not fragile by nature, as the band still managed to keep on rocking despite their recording location and all of their equipment burning down to the ground. Eventually though, it was the age-old problem of lack of finances that led to the band's demise. 1976: Fragile - Fragile - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IukOOftOTk

THE FRANTICS A Psychedelic Rock band from Billings, Montana, who were variously known as "The Frantics", and then simply "Frantics" (without the definite article), before finally settling on "Frantic", which wouldn't have mattered back in the early 1970's, but complicates matters in 2024 when you're frantically searching for them on the Internet (although not quite as Frantic as Harrison Ford searching for his missing wife). 1970: The Frantics - Birth - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nQPviY1QP1NPWulAh_3EdF3RdsJI3M6Bw 1971: Frantic - Conception - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK9BmWw_rXM Edited by Psychedelic Paul - September 08 2024 at 05:02 |

THE FREAK SCENE Originally known as The Deep, a New York based Garage Rock band who travelled to Philadelphia to make an album on a limited budget of just $1200 - which is roughly what the original vinyl album is worth to serious collectors these days - but the band never toured and the album failed to chart. Hoping a name-change would bring them a change of fortune, the band kept the same line-up but changed their name to The Freak Scene for the release of "Psychedelic Psoul", but their sophomore album also met with a similar lack of success and the band broke up shortly afterwards. The Deep have their place in musical history though as they were the very first band to use the term "Psychedelic" in their album title. 1966: The Deep - Psychedelic Moods - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k8GhabZHmQxwU64W5dw8YwvSPNy59WGv4 1967: The Freak Scene - Psychedelic Psoul - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_ldtmcOA5hqyygJIviGsgEM-vtg14WoDOY |
