My Dad's name was Robin and he was born in Sherwood too, so he's doubly qualified when it comes to the legend of Robin Hood.

Mine might be more appropriate for the RNC:

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Robin Hood, yes, but the whole truth is that capitalism is the reverse Robin Hood while "welfare capitalism" is the usual one. Edited by David_D - August 26 2024 at 05:41 |

From Denmark: Jethro Tull - "Cross-eyed Mary" "Who would be a poor man A beggar man, a thiefIf he had a rich man in his hand? And who would steal the candy From a laughing baby's mouth If he could take it from the money man?" to symbolize the much effort which historically has been done in Denmark to diminish poverty and establish Denmark as a country of "welfare capitalism".

For the Netherlands I'd pick this one:
The barrel organ is of old an element of Dutch culture. When I was younger, this instrument could be heard on the streets quite often - nowadays its sound is more or less caged within the bounds of a kermesse. In "Mammoth" it is embedded in a short prog track. Moreover, the city where I live has a museum dedicated to musical boxes and barrel organs.

^ It would appear Nottingham is more popular in the progosphere than I gave it credit for.

[QUOTE=Psychedelic Paul] ^ I never knew anyone had recorded a song about Nottingham, and I'm even more surprised that it's by Focus. These few words taken from Arena 's Solomon to lift up your somewhat shaky morale Throw away my life in the fireplace With the old love letters And the Nottingham laces; Trying to forget the warm embraces Video suppers and the funny faces Does it matter to you? Does it matter to you? Does it matter to you? Does it matter at all? [ LOL] Nottingham |

I'm from Norwich, England - my music of choice: Pink Floyd (naturally). [Cambridge is only in the next county going west.]

I'm from Hamburg. Hamburg in Germany has the status of a "Land", which is something like a US State. So Hamburg can have its own entry, but which one should it be?
If it should really stand out (in strangeness), I'll nominate Asmus Tietchens: If it should be something catchy instead, I go with Kante:

I'm from Swindon so it's going to be XTC (although Rick Davies and Justin Hayward also come from the same town). Their most obvious song is English Roundabout. Not very proggy , more reggae, but Swindon is most 'famous' for its many roundabouts (sad but true). Another not very interesting fact is that the band Oasis named themselves after the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon. It's true, look it up if you don't believe me

The nearest I could get to Nottingham was Robin of Sherwood by Clannad, although I was actually born in Sherwood, so that would make the song eligible from my point of view.

Paul, as you hail from Nottingham and know Focus, I might have thought that you would choose the instrumental "Elspeth of Nottingham" by Focus on Focus 3. Buckethead also has a Nottingham instrumental, by the way. Edited by Logan - August 25 2024 at 09:47 |

I live in Herefordshire, UK...
so for me, they'd have to play Mike Oldfield: Hergest Ridge (both sides, please!)
