THE FLOATING OPERA A Psychedelic Rock band from Ann Arbor, Michigan, who took their name from an existentialist novel by American author John Barth which tells the nihilistic story of a protagonist who's contemplating suicide - the literary equivalent of listening to a Leonard Cohen album. Don't worry though, the music of The Floating Opera is far more uplifting than the gloomy book, despite the title of the first song on the album: Song of the Suicides. ![]() |

THE FLIES There was a bit of a buzz going around the London underground scene when British pop-psych band The Flies (formerly known as In-Sect and No Flies On Us But) first appeared, but they were soon swatted away, having not managed to stick around long enough to record a full album together,. The Flies did record a memorable single though - a cover version of "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" - which you can find on the Chocolate Soup for Diabetics compilation, for those with a sweet tooth. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 30 2024 at 10:59 |

FLIED EGG The Japanese Uriah Heep, brought to you by the legendary powerhouse trio of Shigeru Narumo (guitars, keyboards), Hiro Tsunoda (drums) and Masayoshi Takanaka (bass). Flied Egg emerged from the earlier outfit Strawberry Path, where Shigeru (the Japanese Steven Wilson of his day) is rumoured to have played keyboards, guitar and bass pedal all at the same time, and that's no yolk! Sayonara. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Flied Egg "reunioned" at the Budokan, Tokyo in 1997 ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 29 2024 at 01:18 |

FLEUR DE LIS Let's go to to Copenhagen and wear flowers in our hair for this mysterious psychedelic gem, where you can have your Fleur de Lys cake and eat it too with icing on the top. Who cares if the lyrics are partly in Danish, which only adds to the mysticism and mystique of this cult classic. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

FLAMING YOUTH Do You Remember Flaming Youth? No, not many people do, but that was Phil Collins' first band in the flowering of his youth at the tender age of 18. At Face Value, Flaming Youth were a good band and they should have been a big success, but such are the vagaries of the music business that Against All Odds the band never managed to achieve a commercial breakthrough and they broke up in 1970. Flaming Youth are now just a footnote in Genesis' history, but they did remain together long enough to record one flaming hot album, and here it is.....

FLAKE An Aussie Psych-Pop band from Sydney with an album that's as tasty as the crumbliest, flakiest chocolate you've ever tasted before. Sadly, Flake's bass player was forced to drop out before their first gig due to the fact that his father died, his house burned down, he split up with his girlfriend and he was called up for national service in the Army - all in the space of one week - which surely rivals Unlucky Alf for being the unluckiest man on the planet. THE FIVE DAY WEEK STRAW PEOPLE Although you may not be familiar with the bizarrely-named Five Day Week Straw People. this obscure one-off album project was conceived by none other than John Du Cann - the powerhouse behind such bands as Andromeda, The Attack and Atomic Rooster - whose chickens have come home to roost! No, I've no idea what that peculiar turn-of-phrase means either. ![]() ![]() |

FIVE DAY RAIN The outlook is for sunny spells followed by five days of rain - just another typical week's weather in sunny old England, and when BBC weather forecaster Michael Fish tells you, "Don't worry. There isn't a hurricane on the way", that's when it's time to batten down the hatches and prepare for The Storm of the Century! ![]() |

FIRE (U.K.) From Croatian Fire to U.K. Fire, it's a psychedelic concept album for fans of the Strawbs, featuring Dave Cousins, Paul Brett & Dave Lambert. The Magic Shoemaker (who probably hails from Northampton) was notable for being produced by Tony Clarke - the sixth Moody Blue. Fire didn't exactly set the world alight, but it's an album for collectors, so it should appeal to Imelda Marcos. ![]() ![]() |

FIRE A Croatian hard rock band who take obscurity to new levels of oblivion, although they were probably the hottest happening in Zagreb for a brief time. Not surprisingly, Fire only made one album and despite relocating to Holland in the hope of selling a few more albums, their record company said, "You're Fired!" ![]() |

FILET OF SOUL Sweet soulful psych from Wisconsin. By all accounts, Filet of Soul's Freedom is a rare album, but how much is it worth to a serious collector of obscure psych? Well, that's like asking how much a piece of paper is worth, although the denizens of Dragons Den appear to have the answer. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 13 2024 at 07:26 |

FEAR ITSELF A short-lived band from Atlanta, Georgia, led by psychedelic hippie blues goddess Ellen McIlwaine. President Franklin D. Roosevelt said in his inaugural address back in 1933, "The only thing we have to fear is Fear Itself", which could just as easily apply to the weird and crazy year of 2020, when sanity took an extended vacation. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 09 2024 at 08:48 |
