Imagine that these bands in each poll option could have got together to produce an album, and imagine that each band's members could come from any period and collaborate despite being of different times/eras. So, for instance, if you wanted you could take the line-up of King Crimson in 1973's Larks' Tongues in Aspic and have it collaborate with the IQ of 2014 (time of Road of Bones methinks based on memory). If no pairing here is really intriguing or seems at all good, feel free to vote for the one that seems least abominable. Just none of the "none" type comments, please. At least try to be more creative in response than that. Some of these pairings would make more sense in terms of possibly fruitful fits than others, I would say. And feel free to mention other pairings provided that you try to comment on and vote for any of the listed choices. Please try to limit any negativity. I know it can be very apples and oranges, or even bananas and motorcycles (or just plain bananas), and pretty weird, but then I am a pretty strange animal if it was not already obvious. No multiple votes this time. I think that UK and Henry Cow could have come up with something really interesting had the band members worked together in the late 70s.

OT's Jurassic Shift combined with UZ's Uzed. OT gets sort of samey after a while, but the more complex orchestration and complex arrangements of UZ with Ed's guitar and those bubbly synths could be pretty cool.

Hi,
Nice listing ... and it had my imagination running wild! The one I thought about was Edgar Froese in his book, talking about David Bowie, when he realized that David was not as open to free form and feel, as it was originally thought, and at that point he apologized to David and said that the styles and music was too different to make it work. It's the longest chapter in Edgar's book, but it really says a lot more about his talent and how it works than David, who often "had to find his voice" in his lyrics per the producer quote in the book. I don't think that Edgar, through his years, ever really wondered about a wrong "note" even though his constant looks at the members sometimes suggest otherwise, but I think those were more cues than anything else.

It would be great fun/ interesting to do an artists one. David Bowie and Klaus Schulze would be a fine pairing, methinks, and an odder and less up my alley pairing would be Igor Wakhevitch and Roine Stolt, or even Robert Wyatt and Neal Morse (maybe call the album God Won't Give Up on my Rock Bottom). Oops, that does sound rather offensive.

IQ and King Crimson. The look on Robert Fripp's face would be priceless.

Wendy Carlos and Weird Al Yankovi... oh, wait
![]() Joking aside I think an Ozrics/Univers Zero pairing would be a joy to hear for the exact reasons stated by Stegor. Mahavishnu x Godspeed would probably be in second place. |

Saga and Tangerine Dream circa 1980-81 would be groovy. But I'd do a "mix 'n' match" lineup:
M. Sadler synth only, no vocals J. Schmoelling piano & synth solo J. Gilmour more synth E. Froese guitar (right channel) & sequencing I. Crichton guitar (left channel) S. Negus drumkit C. Franke sound design & sequencing J. Crichton production |

Assuming albums from all of these exist but I can buy only one, I'd probably go for Haken & NSRO. Really curious how that'd sound. Ozrics & UZ would be the safest option though - really hard for them to come up with something I won't like. A much younger self of mine would have been super excited about Saga & Tangerine Dream getting together. Let's say they do this 1981, could still sound great (I'd have to disagree with fellow TD enthusiast verslibre though - I'd absolutely want to hear Sadler singing on this). Mahavishnu and GSYBE is another promising pairing.
Now if I could design a parallel world with one such collaboration in it, I'd have Peter Gabriel singing for Can. Even if I'd somehow have to integrate Genesis' other members, it may be worth it.

Ah,m I can scarecly believe I forgot to do a Can collab. I'd like Can meets black midi. Faust 1973 meets Coil 2005 would be a dream come true for me (musically not that odd of a pairing, but temporally unlikely)

Tool & Spirogyra WOULD be very unlikely. But perhaps even MORE unlikely would be Tool And Spyro Gyra.

Saga and Tangerine Dream aren't much unlikely, IMO. One unlikely is Genesis lead by Phil Collins with the late Stormy Six

Again, I think my problem with participating here is that I tend to only be familiar with the music of ONE artist in each pairing (usually the more melodic side!)
The only ones I could comment on with any authority would be DT/ VDGG, Frost/ GG, IQ/ KC & Saga/ TD and I'm honestly not sure I'd want to hear an amalgam of any of them tbh...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Moon Safari & Aranis. Very unlikely, but it would be interesting to hear what they could come up with.

If I could mix-n-match, I'd pair Talk Talk with King Crimson. Back in the day when I was getting tired of Belew's vocals and I was listening to Talk Talk, I thought what a beautiful pairing Mark Hollis' voice would be with '70s KC.
