Those About To Die

A Roman epic precursor to Gladiator, I assume Amazon have sunk a fortune into this. Great special effects but with Roland Emmerich directing don't expect any special acting. Even Anthony Hopkins is made to look average but I liked JoJo Macari's very stary wild eyed performance a lot. You pretty much know where its all going. The star actor Iwan Rheon seems somewhat lost trying to give a nucanced performance that is not needed. Will they make more? I don't know. With an IMD rating of 6.6 (that seems about right) then it must be doubtful. The chariot racing is great but the drama is easily forgotten.

yep more Anthony Starr love from me as well. Should be taking the acting honours all day long. He was also very good in the offbeat and violent Cinemax series Banshee. I loved that almost as much as the Boys.

Yeah, Banshee was awesome. Some of the best fight scenes I've seen.

Baby Reindeer

This is about as 'Netflix' as it gets, supposedly a 'true story' about a man that seems to develop a weird fascination with someone who stalks him after he offers them a small act of kindness. This goes places that you wouldn't believe. Great writing and acting from all concerned. Just about as perfect as it gets and will win awards. 9.5/10
Caveat - if you have been the victim of abuse you may find this impossible to watch.

This Town

The latest offering from Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight, this is also set in his home town of Birmingham but during the civil unrest of the early 80's. I presume this is quite personal for him. It has great characters and a few well known actors such as Michelle Dockery and Neil Pinnock but most are unknown future stars in waiting. Very intense at times and not for the faint of heart. Hopefully a second series to come. 8/10

^ I was wondering how to rate this series. I thought the ending was dreadful and padded out. A long conversation between the queens and some filming from a side angle to make it appear more artsy. The could easily have just done 2 more episodes and canned the whole thing for good. I do think the acting is good. I remember Olivia Cooke in Bates Motel where she was great and she is good in this. Matt Smith is splendid and one of my favourite actors, he was brilliant in The Crown and one of the best Doctors of the modern era of that show. The support actors are also mostly good. They didn't cast on the basis of 'whose prettiest' but went for 'character' instead. The source material is mainly the issue and the commercial decision to go 3 seasons rather than 2. The Dragons are great although too often they are deliberately made to look like a flying T-Rex for greater impact.

Hi,

Just got done with the second series of "House of Dragon" ... and while I did not dislike it, it took me a long time to be able to make sense of things, and the separation of the various factions. The original GoT, had it easier, the different folks were VERY DIFFERENT, and here, it is like they were all under one roof and you hardly had the chance to see it all clearly ... by the 6th/7th episode, I think I finally got it, sort of, and while I do not think the writing of the show is great, I do think that the quality of some of the acting, leans towards the cartoonish side of things, which in many ways, was something that GoT made sure it did not happen with outstanding acting and performances, all the way to the end.

Other than a couple of folks here, I do not find the acting special at all and the two leading women are nice, but way too stiff, and they are not exactly the best thing in the whole thing. And neither are the brothers, who appear to be just playing around with toys ... at least in GoT, they got rid of the king playing with toys ... but here, everyone has toys, is the only thing one can say, but the acting, is not well thought out and inspired ... the slow down at times, to make it look like it is serious, becomes sad, and drags down several scenes ... I think it was meant to be stronger, but I'm not sure the directing, was capable of bringing out more from those actors at all, specially if the cinematography was not a serious part of its design ... it all looks like it was just a one room stage ... change the drapes ... better yet ... let's make it outside with a flying dragon! And in this way to look at it, HoD comes off really cheaply done, with no clean definition of what the whole thing means, beyond some thing that folks took to and liked in the books, but the translation of it, was hurried, poorly designed, and not thought off as important ... and this usually goes back to the quality of the actors and their ability, with a director having the taste and TOUCH to make something work. I have the thought/feeling that they did not have the time and desire to put a better effort into this ... figuring the cartoon side would run the show and who cares about the actors and folks ... they die quick and easy!

As for the story ... its typical TV ... stretch it so that there will be more and more and more, of the same thing! I never got that feeling in GoT in 8 seasons worth ... and here I was hoping that the 2nd season would not be the same thing all over ... but we have to use the Deux en Maxima trick to create some tension, and hope the dragons are not the heroes ... I'm kinda wanting them to end their misery quicker ... because while good, it was getting tiring.

It gets a "B" ... I'm not sure that I even like some of the casting in this series ... it feels like it was the best they found, but I doubt if they wanted more quality from the actors, though at least one of them, is very good in a role that is thankless and leaves us hoping that he can help it work ... while helping a sick and healing king, that has been removed and will likely die quickly if the chance arrives. Now you know what stretching the story is about ... that sick king has a part to play, yet!

Oh well, it is a TV show after all ... talent is not necessary! And worse, this series is not sexy at all ... which, in some ways makes it more boring! Written by men, for men, with men .... so TV soap opera minded. I imagine that one of the complaints from some folks was that the original had too much sex ... well, at least it helped give us a story ... this one is scrambling like crazy for a story ... and now it is up to the dragons?

The Beast Must Die

Sounds like it could be a Hammer film but it's actually a psychological drama in 5 parts with Jared Harris (from Chernobyl) that in the end is a bit of a disappointment. What's that saying? ''Revenge is best served cold''. This is written around that premise. It's good but lacks real punch for me. 7/10

Also finished Suspect Series 2. Doing 8 twenty five minute episodes of a thriller plot is slightly unusual but it serves to put it apart from everything else out there. Each episode features a specific character and usually a well known actor. I liked it although no sign of James Nesbitt in this series, this time it's Anne Marie Duff (Bad Sisters) taking the lead. She is very good in this and the 2 episodes that have both her and Dominic Cooper in are definitely the best. Appears to be heading for a 3rd season by the looks of it. 8/10

Presumed Innocent Limited Series of 8 episodes. I thought it was good. Can't say that much about it. Keeps you guessing all the way to the end. Not David E Kelley's best work but not bad all the same.7/10

First season of The Courtship of Eddie's Father with Bill Bixby as a widowed Dad & Brandon Cruz his young son who's always trying to find him a wife.   Funny, touching and ful of soul, it was one of the best family comedies of the late 60s/early 70s.   Plus an amazing score by the great Harry Nilsson.

Watched the first 4 episodes of Those About To Die, the latest Roman epic and a prequel of sorts to the TV series Sparticus. Looks amazing ( I recommend upgrading your Amazon subscription to the Ad free version for a month and then binge it) and is warming up nicely. I mainly wanted to mention it for the British actor Jojo Macari. He plays one of the main characters and is brilliant. Apparently he was in Master Of The Air and Bad Education, 2 shows I've never watched. Judging by For Those About To die he's destined to be a big star. I can see him getting the roles that Tom Hardy used to get. He's got that thing about him!

We finished the last series of Vikings: Valhalla last night. It had that feeling of just getting it done to finish off. Not too bad though 7.5/10

Finished Season 4 today. I agree about that 'holding' season feeling. Episode 5 with the farm animals wa a blast. It'll be interesting to see how they end the series considering they have plans to continue the world of The Boys with spinoffs. Gen V season 2 is next and a series to be set in Mexico. Though, I would put the over/under that half of the cast is offed in Season 5.

I love Gen V as well and note the crossover in the season finale. Season 2 should be fun (hopefully).

Just watching Season 2 of Suspect and who pops up in  it - Dominic Cooper playing a very dark character. Reminded of the 'precursor' of The Boys, namely Preacher which he starred in. Same writer for both being Garth Ennis. That was an interesting show although I would say The Boys and Gen V are better.

do you think it matters whether it is accurate or not? Just interested. I watched the first 2 seasons and enjoyed them but the cast change for Season 3 (Olivia Coleman for Claire Foy) was way too jarring so I gave up.
I though John Lithgow portrayal of Winston Churchill was outstanding and he deserved his Emmy. Matt Smith made a great Duke Of Edinburgh as well.

Finally we get a decent episode of House Of The Dragon. I was wondering when something was going to happen!
...

Hi,

Been watching it ... with only one comment ... it took me 5 episodes to not feel confused and dizzy from a back-less story?

At least the original, GoT, had its story right from the start, and it made it a lot easier to follow ... the HoD is a bit of a mess in that area, with too many factions doing their own thing and confusing the story too much ... I think they decided that getting rid of some characters with a dragon or two, was the path to take to simplify the story ... but taking over 6 hours to get that far?

In most movies we would have left a long time ago!

agreed!
