The extreme metal band Behemoth from my country had an over the top "Satanic" shtick, complete with occult symbols, corpse paint and so on

^Haha. Those true hardcore metalheads and their tiresome, predictable opinions are posers in their own way. Yes I know they're nothing like TNBM and has no street (or forest) credibility. It's all image, smoke and mirrors, but I don't mind. I found them mildly entertaining live for fifteen, maybe twenty minutes. In my modest Pop Metal collection The Satanist is placed somewhere in between Hysteria and Slippery When Wet - WHERE IT BELONGS!:)

I can't verify that online! This is what Palmer-James said about the song TR: As far as I know Robert Fripp is the co-author of "The Great Deceiver" lyrics... RPJ: Yes, it's true. John called on me in Munich then and said: "Listen, Robert has written this verse and would like it to be in the lyrics of one of the pieces". And I replied: "OK, no problem". I mean the words which later became the chorus of "The Great Deceiver". As far as I know these are the only lyrics Robert has written for King Crimson. My duty was to create a setting for them, to add a scenery. And a satiric song was written, such an ironical comment on all commercial activities. TR: Who is The Great Deceiver? RPJ: It's the devil. After all the traces of the devil's presence may be detected in many King Crimson pieces. TR: Even in the name... RPJ: Even in the name |

Still, I'm not much for the Satan business, as the question for me is, what does it mean in relation to other people.

The word Satan ultimately came from Hebrew meaning "adversary" therefore the whole Satan thing has historically referred to nothing more than a rebellion against the status quo. The term has taken on a good vs evil connotation through the manipulation of religious organizations over the centuries. These days it's more a gimmick than anything however Satanic cults do exist although they don't worship a devil. They are more about attaining personal power through occult manipulation of unseen forces that can be harnessed through ritualistic practices. While evil clearly exists in the world, most cultures do not attribute it to a figurehead fallen angel but rather a force of nature. Satan in music is usually more about pure fantasy just like swords and sorcery and science fiction. It's all good theatrical fun really with no harm done. Of course there were early black metal bands that killed and burned down churches and all that. Definitely some neo-Nazi groups that are considered Satanic but the term is rather nebulous when you dig into its origins. Most people i've known who claim to be Satanic are merely anti-religion and that's their way of expressing it. Edited by siLLy puPPy - July 02 2024 at 11:01 |

This song by Skaldowie is more/less about the absence of Satan. :P The title translates to "There is no Satan". |

I recall a much different kind of Satan worship in the early 70s. For example, a local gathering that practiced Black Magic and wore robes and masks...dancing around a fire sing-song chanting. They claimed to belong to a cult of old. One that traveled to the U.S. in eighteen hundreds..nevertheless they performed a certain ritual every hundred years. It was known as the One Hundred Year Ritual. They were interrogated by police shortly after a ritualistic killing at Menantico. The witch who called herself Lilith Sinclair was a priestess of the Church Of Satan. She claimed that members of her group were harassed after the Black Magic sacrifice of Mike Newell at Menantico. She revolted against the Church Of Satan before forming the Temple Of Set. Interestingly though....her group were posers in the Assembly Of God Church. The 3rd generation Watchtower Society in Vineland N.J. were also practicing a kind of Duo Worship. Praying to God...believing in Christ...the son of God and king of kings...then in the evening wearing robes and masks ...Pounding on drums ..chanting ...which derived from a Luciferian concept. Putting a child with power into a pit of dead snakes to channel a demon through them. Bringing children to the underground tunnels and making them write with a feathered pen as they chanted. As a force of Automatic Writing. They were more interested in Demonology or Judeo-Christian concepts. Sacrificing a human as a cause to gain power. Much of it in the Bog Burials in northern Europe or James G. Frazier The Golden Bough. When attending the church service or a picnic we'd be holding hands with these people and running through the fields. They were wealthy and kind of mysterious. At times scary. Possibly programmed. |

^ yes indeed! The scary thing about organizations like the Temple of Set is that it has direct connections to the U.S. government and military. The organization was established by Michael Aquino, a military officer. After investigating all this stuff for many years ago, it's really hard to distinguish between allegorical legends and symbolism and authentic tales of human sacrifice however enough Satanic ritual abuse survivors have come out to tell their tales and they all share a common thread. It's definitely real. The tactics of MK Ultra mind control that were invented by the CIA and other intelligence units definitely are a part of the overall equation. It seems that even much of the music we love was infused with subliminal programming techniques however i think if a person has a firm grip on morality through whatever means s/he found it, then even silly Satanic music is harmless. Let us not forget the musicologist's "Devil's Chord"
What is the "tritone" and how does it relate to the music of King Crimson? The tritone, as it relates to music theory, is the interval of three whole tones. It can also be thought of as an augmented 4th or a diminished 5th. An excerpt from McGill University Web site: "The tritone was used in Gregorian chant, but from at least the tenth century it was considered dissonant and labeled as the "diabolus in musica". In the sixteenth century, composers started to use the tritone as part of the dominant seventh chord to strengthen the authentic cadence, and also to achieve tonal ambiguity. In early nineteenth century opera, the tritone was often used to portray the ominous or evil - this use continues in theatre music today." Now, perhaps, one can see how this dissonant sound is related to the music of King Crimson. Early KC often played 'Mars'(the Holst composition), which itself is a well-known classical use of the tritone. 'The Devil's Triangle' (from the 'Wake of Poseidon' album) is a further evolution of this idea. The tritone continues to be heard today in the music of King Crimson as well as the ProjeKcts. https://www.elephant-talk.com/wiki/FAQ_-_Miscellaneous Here's a bit more for interested readers: https://breakthroughguitar.com/the-sinister-symphony-what-is-the-devils-chord-called/ Edited by cstack3 - July 02 2024 at 22:37 |
