Hi folks,
I am on a quest to identify the first bands/artists of generation x to make progressive rock. Yes, generation x were certainly fed by boomer prog, but i am looking for the musicians that created music from our generation. Cobain is probably more likely pegged as the voice of gen x disatisfaction, but that was not the only language of gen x. Of course Steven Wilson counts but in the timeline, im trying to find the earliest prog music of gen x. What do you guys think? |

Imo, Echolyn were the first prog band from Generation X. None of the members as far as I know were born before 1964.

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

There are 2 directions this question can take. The first is who was the first born prog rock artist from generation x. I think it might be Derek Sherinian but I am still looking. The second is what was the first gen xer to come onto the prog scene- as in the earliest prog to feature primarily members of gen x. For reference, most demographics consider generation x to be between the years 1965-1980. Some versions skew to 62, but the majority say 65.

Thanks, Echolyn had not even come to mind. Such a great band as well. If they are one of the first to represent our voice coming through the music then that would be a great start. Do you know if they have any songs that we might say clearly speak as their generation? Another question here is which bands sing about generation x as a culture but are progressive rock bands? The rabbit hole goes deep as I look at the question.

Dream Theater minus the original singer comes to mind.
Not the earliest Gen X proggers, but The Aristocrats are an excellent band, and Marco Minnemann's solo works are superb. |

Dream Theater's first album appeared in '89, two years earlier than Echolyn's. From 1985-1987, Dream Theater was known as Majesty (they released a cassette EP called The Majesty Demos in '86). After original singer Chris Collins was let go, it took them a year to find Charlie Dominici. The name change happened when another band based in Vegas threatened to sue them. |

Not sure. Maybe Carpe Diem from their debut album. Maybe also 21 from their sophmore release Suffocating the Bloom. As for DT I didn't think of them maybe because they are prog metal. Echolyn are still one of the earliest.

So the precise question to answer can be: Which was the first Progressive Rock album made by musicians born in the years 1965-80? |

quality over quantity, and all kind of PopcoRn almost beyond

Oh, yeah, we gotta watch the metal tag, huh? Atavism of Twilight is another one of the earliest, but Echolyn beat them by a year. AoT were great. |

This is kind of hard since there are a lot of musicians for which we don't know their year of birth. I've been wondering if Devil Doll would be a good candidate. When was Mr. Doctor (Mario Panciera) born?
Maybe Discipline?

Yeah, they're out by only a few years. But Atavism of Twilight has a connection: Aaron Kenyon (b. 1970) played bass in DK while Henry J. Osborne was earning his teaching credential. |
