I've gone with VDGG today, but there's 8 or 9 up there I could make a case for...

No vote because Camel, Gentle Giant and VDGG are all basically a tie for me.

Oh wait. I didn't see Rush right away so definitely them.
So are Eloy, Gong and Nektar.

Eloy & Nektar only seem to get some love from a few members, a bit like Hawkwind..

I would say that about Happy the Man but probably not about the ones I mentioned (or even Hawkwind). However, even if I were to agree with you then you would have to say the same thing about a few that did make the list like Le Orme, Magma and Grobshnitt (and maybe one or two others).

Great list! Id probably add Kansas (already said), UK, and Alan Parsons Project. You have several from my personal Big 17. Le Orme is interesting. I find myself listening to them more often lately.
Camel and Caravan, Gentle Giant, Supertramp, VDGG There are a few on your list that I need to explore more in depth. |

Most any poll that gets to seven pages and is still getting votes AND commentary after six years is masterful in its way. It has been said before that good threads never die, they just keep maturing and improving. That person was not very familiar with auto-lock, or Dream Theater for that matter (j/k).
Anyway, this is my third post in this topic. I wrote this in 2018:
And this in 2019 (was bumped twice).
And yep, I am confident that I voted for Magma. I rarely vote without commenting on my vote, but when I chose to vote this had likely fallen off the page and I didn't want to revive without something to say, useless as it is anyway, beyond registering my vote. I wish we did not have locked threads, and we had one forum for newer active polls (say last response was in the past month) and one for ones from the archives. I say because so often people comment on posts from old polls without the user still being around, so not always so good for conversation. I do like to see recycling and I poll some out of the real depths of time occasionally (mostly as a kind of archaeological/anthropological/ sociological/ historical interest).. From that list I'd say Focus, followed by Curved Air and Renaissance.

No vote because this kind of Prog Polls are getting more and more pointless, boring and repetitive.

I voted for VdGG, but I'm fond/very fond of at least one album by almost all the bands on the list. Edited by David_D - January 27 2024 at 06:00 |

What do you look for in the kinds of Prog polls you favour? I do like some originality/ innovation in the approach and subject matter often, but having been around as long as I have it's rare that a poll feels really fresh to me. That said, I often care more about reading the replies and the digressions/diversions than the actual subject matter of the poll. I especially like polls where I am likely to discover new-to-me music that I appreciate and where it leads to some discussion about the music. And I like one's that are about personal favourites usually even if my tastes are quite different. That way the OP is more likely to be a positive and enthusiastic conversationalist, which I appreciate from those whose topics I participate in. I know I can spend too much time making polls, and series of polls. but that exercise helps me to appreciate music more deeply and can help to connect with others. Favourite bands polls/threads are something new for me to try, but it may not last long, as I find them difficult to deal with, and can be problematic too. Edited by David_D - January 26 2024 at 16:03 |

Le Orme and Gentle Giant both equal top. Equally great in the 70s and they spanned the whole decade. Camel and Graaf next in line but they missed out on 70-72 and 72-74. Magma and Caravan next. Rush were strong from 78-82. Banco, Grob and Tramp cool too. Some of these brands are big 6 for me. Yes and Elp not even top 1 lol

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Quite a lot of participation in this poll that makes it interesting result wise. Camel and Rush came after the first wave of prog bands so will never be considered 'Big Six'. Gentle Giant and VDGG have more a case imo. That said surely we now have an established 'Big Ten' at least. One band that I think is missing from the argument is Eloy. Again slightly after the first wave they established a level of consistency over 10 years from Inside to Time To Turn that is as good as any of the major prog bands. They are a top ten prog band for me easily.

And I'll be happy to tell that they're: Camel - The Snow Goose Renaissance - debut VdGG - H to He, Godbluff, Still Life Caravan - ItLoGaP Focus - Moving Waves, 3, Hamburger C. Supertramp - The Crime Gentle Giant - Acquiring the Taste Moody Blues - Days of Future Banco - Darwin!, Io Sono Magma - 1001 C., Udu Wudu, Attahk PFM - Per un Amico (also Photos of Ghosts), The World Le Orme - Felona e Sorona Soft Machine - debut I can also tell that amongst those I miss much on the list are Eloy and Oldfield. |

Imo, Rush should always be part of the big six. I'm guessing the reason they aren't is because they were Canadian and not English and maybe also because they came a little later. Kansas are almost never mentioned as one of the top prog bands either but get even more neglected than Rush.
