Marillion: Sounds That Can't Be Made.

   Revisiting this album for the track "Gaza", for obvious reasons, I was pleasantly surprised how much much more I like it then in years back. The title track is still sublime as are most others on this album. I don't like changing my ratings years after the fact but I'll post it here:
 After suffering through initial listens of both TAAB2 and Homo Erraticus, I was soothed by playing this emotive and passionate new offering from Marillion. I, for one, was never a fan of the 80's neo-prog (read neo-Genesis) movement and always found the H era band to be a breath of fresh air. What makes this album work for me is the honest level of sincerity that shines through the songs. The epic opener Gaza has a huge in you face sound that compliments Hogarth's yearning vocals. The song is not a political vehicle but simply one mans observation that enough is enough. The title track Sounds That Can't Be Made contains all of the key musical signatures that make Marillion's sound so unique: Peter T's thick shuddering base lines, Ian Mosley's pile driver drums, ominous keys from Mark Kelly, ridiculously melodic guitar solos from Steve Rothery and, of course, Steve H's impassioned vocals.This musical bliss and blitz carries over into the following songs Pour My Love and Power. The long slower reflective song Montreal is probably where this album should have ended as the concluding three songs contain two straight up albeit very good rockers (Invisible Ink, Lucky Man) and concludes with another long slow burning number (The Sky Above The Rain). I try to think of these songs as bonus cuts as the proceeding 5 choice songs total 50 minutes in running time. STCBM may not be a perfect Marillion album (3.5 stars is my rating) but after hearing so many new prog albums that lack emotion and passion, Roy Harper's Man And Myth being the exception, it's good to feel that blast of fresh air again.

What say you on this excellent Marillion album from 2014?

	I've always enjoyed it and pleased to see you've highlighted it. Many hopped back on the Marillion bus with FEAR but I got back on with this.

	STCBM has always been a fav of mine, from release date. It's what I like from the later years of Marillion. FEAR was not bad and AHBID was a let down for me, the first listen was fine then it fell to the wayside.....I have to force myself to spin it.

	This was the first Hogarth era Marillion album I got, so perhaps I like it more than I would have otherwise. I haven't gotten so many of their studio albums, but I have got quiet a few live ones (including full performances of Brave and Marbles, which I sadly found underwhelming compared to their reputation), so that I get an overall idea of their Hogarth era music. However, I have the impression that if I did know all their studio albums, this would be my favourite all the same (though perhaps it doesn't feature my very favourite songs, which are The Space and Neverland).

	I prefer the first era of the band but that second has some great records such as Holidays In Eden, Marbles and of course, Sounds That Can't Be Made. "Gaza" is a masterpiece but the rest of it is pretty much on the same level The overall this record is a very intense and emotional.Hogarth and Rothery are brilliant on the entire album.

	I am a sucker for H era, and Sounds is definitely a top dog in that era. Gaza is such an amazing epic too.

	Sounds That Can't Be Made is, in my opinion, a masterpiece. Is it perfect? Probably not. But even the weaker tracks I have a soft spot for. I have to admit, it took me a long time to appreciate Gaza, mainly for the lyrics. I used to cringe at some of the lyrics, but I've come to love the song for what it is and the emotional weight that it carries. The title track, "Montreal," and "The Sky Above the Rain" are among the best Marillion songs.
