If you mean in the '70s, I'd say there was quite a bit of else but not very much.

But I wonder how much of the US prog scene was jazz rock/fusion? It's funny watching those y/t videos of the Sea Of Tranquility gang trying to make a case for Styx as a prog band. (I mean I don't know but for many in the UK they are only remembered for 'You babe')
Nordic prog is the new RPI. It's a whole scene of it's own and so many great bands that keep giving.

All progressive music... that includes my whole jazz collection - and much, much more. There's 40 million people living in California alone. That's 13 million more people than all of the Nordic countries combined. And I would struggle to limit myself down to a hundred of my favorite Nordic progressive music albums.

All of those I listed are my favorites. I don't know exactly how many US prog albums I own, but I estimate that list is about 25% of them.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Hi, There are too many to consider, in my book, and I could never exclude The Doors, or even The Grateful Dead, Spirit, It's a Beautiful Day ... and even Jefferson Airplane. If you have not heard the remastered first and second album by TGD, they feature the long cuts that were what all the bootlegs were about for many years, which made TGD very famous for allowing folks to record off their board, and never did they complaint about it. It was a love fest! Something that I'm not sure the progressive folks can relate to. Music for the sake of its beauty ... nothing else, and everyone could share it and experience it! I keep thinking that CHICAGO deserves to be listed ... they had too many great things in the first 4 or 5 albums that were very special and still sound magnificent ... we just don't listen to it, I guess, because we think that brass doesn't fit in progressive music! I would think that TVU deserves to be mentioned as well, but I don't know, or think that their material is exactly progressive at all ... it is very "personal", but not quite progressive, though they made their mark and fame because they were in NY and sold big in a huge area with the population to distort the likes, and sales, of a lot of music. There are many more I did not mention, and I find it strange that the Al Kooper and some of those blends in the late 60's are not heard or considered, as some of them probably should be considered "progressive" for its inventiveness at the time ... Later, I think that the USA took the cake. Just seeing Frank, Miles and John Mc listed is a perfect example of how much great music was in America, and very progressive. What I think we miss, or don't get is that America is huge, and sort of like 4 or 5 countries compared to Europe ... so different things from the East Coast as compared to the West Coast are pretty obvious ... and btw, this is most visible in the studies of electronic music in America in the 60's when the West Coast stuff was considered free form and wide open, and the East Coast stuff was thought to be more "composed" .... both standards apply though very different. |

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
