Could it have something to do with the way you're listening to(o) many albums?

Just my opinion but i find "classic" refers to the period where prog was most popular, most productive and most innovative. Great prog has been created ever since but never as a huge explosion of activity as in the years from 1969 - 1974. I surmise "classic" refers to an era as a whole and not the quality of music from individual artists that followed. Prog was new then so the WOW factor made it unlike anything else. Now nothing is really a surprise no matter how enjoyable.

Yes, that's exactly right, bearing in mind I listen to at least ten albums a day, I must have listened to at least two thousand albums since I last listened to Iconoclasta's Reminiscencias.

Maybe you could upgrade your brain to a positronic one like Data has? He can listen to 150 compositions at the same time (that would be 1500 albums a day!). But if you're concerned about analyzing the aesthetics of the music, Data recommends listening to 10 or less compositions simultaneously (which is no slouch at 100 albums a day).

I like what Cozy brought since Simon would've aped Carl's style a little too closely. Too bad they didn't do a second album together. I like 2/3 of ABWH. "Themes," "Fist of Fire," "Brother of Mine," "Birthright" and "Let's Pretend" are great. As for 3 (or Three), it's unforgivably subpar. If legacy prog stalwarts weren't involved, nobody would care about that album. It would get zero mentions!

It may be a lot easier for you to reminisce about Iconoclasta's self-titled 1983 debut, which is just as good.

I'd swap Alpha for The Green Album by Eddie Jobson / Zinc.

^ I wouldn't. Eddie Jobson's Green/Zinc is only a 3-star album for me.

Actually, if talking about numbers of releases each year, this is not correct according to RYM's informations. Their statistics show that each year of the 21st century has so far had more releases than in the '70s, and a lot of years even twice as many. ( https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/progressive-rock/ )

I'd say, classic Prog is not just the Prog from The Classic Era but also a specific kind of Prog, and the term "classic" can refer to this specific, original kind of Prog, too. On that basis, we can for instance talk about Retro Prog as similar to the classic Prog. Edited by David_D - October 26 2023 at 14:56 |

Oof! ELO, GTR and PG didn't make prog albums that year. GTR's is pure sappy AOR, even with Hackett and Howe onboard. Schulze's Dreams really isn't that memorable. 2.5 stars at best. Not a good period for him. Pageant's debut La Mosaique de la Reverie is easily a 5-star recording and a contender for best album of '86!

Oh well, there goes any remaining prog credibility I had left here, having just added ASIA to my Symphonic Prog blog.

I'm a serious Wetton fan but I can't pretend Asia wasn't a big step down from U.K.

I guess it won't suprise you, Paul, when I say that surely not all the albums you list would get the stamp from me as "proper Progressive Rock", even they're approved by Wikipedia.

No, me neither. I certainly wouldn't classify ELO, Peter Gabriel or Talk Talk as Progressive Rock, but I have no objection to them being listed in ProgArchives under Crossover Prog.

Musically I agree, but at least JW got a decent paycheck for once!! Prog doesn't seem to be the best-paying gig in town!
