Go Go Machine Orchestra is a band from Taiwan founded in 2017 by percussionist Ting-Chun Yeh. Besides a drum kit, he plays the marimba. The other musicians in the band are Ni-Li Tang (piano), Pin-Hsin Wang (electronics), and Kwan-Yuen Chen (guitar). Their first album Time was released in 2019 and their second album Symbols was released in 2023.

To my ears, their music is an intriguing mix of styles that include elements of post and math rock, electronics, classical, and fusion. Their second album has an overarching theme of ‘symbols’ where the individual tracks are based on concepts such as RNA, Pascal’s triangle, atoms.

Links to their Bandcamp page and their official site.

Here’s a video from their first album. The track is called Union Works.

This 2022 live performance includes tracks from the latest album.

Here is a recent live TV session.

EDIT: I have no idea if this got noticed but I changed the category to eclectic and now back to post rock based on Yam Yam's post.

Here's an older 2019 live in studio performance with their previous guitarist and fifth member on electronics who is no longer with the group.

I changed my suggestion of post/math to eclectic.

For what it's worth, I also think that this band deserves to be evaluated for inclusion here, but I'd be tempted to stick with your original sub genre of Post Rock/Math Rock rather than Eclectic. Their first album 'Time' is tagged as Minimalism, Electronic, Post-Rock on RYM, and all three albums on bandcamp are tagged as Post Rock and Math Rock.

You might recall a suggestion for the South Korean band Dongyang Gozupa a month or so ago which you contributed to a couple of times, and after a little discussion regarding the sub genre, Greg (Logan) suggested that with Post Rock being a prominent element, that would be the best place to start things off, and we do indeed have one 'yes' vote for them so far in Post Rock.

There is a good summary of Go Go Machine Orchestra's style of music on this Trans Musicales page for the band: https://histoires.lestrans.com/fiche-artiste/go-go-machine-orchestra-2019:

"Go Go Machine Orchestra

PROG-ROCK
The first Taiwanese group invited to the Trans Musicales, Go Go Machine Orchestra is one of these current groups (like Anna Meredith in 2016 or Thor & Friends in 2017) whose composite works take their sources from the minimalist or repetitive music of Steve Reich. But by mixing acoustic (marimba, drums, piano), electric (guitar) and electronic (synthesizer, machines) sounds, the quintet also draws on jazz, progressive rock and post-rock – sometimes echoing the music of Tortoise (Trans Musicales 1997) – to paint dreamlike and majestic soundscapes.

Main genre: Jazz , Contemporary Music , Post-Rock , Prog-Rock
Occasional type: Electronica , Minimalist Music
Origin: Kaohsiung, Taiwan."

I would tend to agree with that summary. Embarrassed

Thank you! The reason why I considered eclectic was that I think there are equal elements of post, math, jazz, classical, and electronic that post/math wasn't necessarily the dominant element. I would like the band to be considered so the title of thread has been changed.

If Post/Math don't want it it is likely to end up with Eclectic. We'll check it then.

So Eclectic first?
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

^ My understanding from Ian's reply above was that his team would have a listen only if Post/Math decided it wasn't a suitable fit for their sub, which suggests that your own team should have a listen to the band's music in the first instance - as after all, they are tagged as Post Rock in several places. So perhaps you could first take a listen yourself, and if you feel that the music merits an evaluation in Post/Math Rock, take it to your team for the other members to have a listen and vote on it.

If after listening to it you don't feel that the music merits an evaluation by your own team, then say so here, and Ian would then hopefully pick it up and take it to the Eclectic team for an evaluation. Smile

Listening to some tracks I hear elements fitting with both the subs. It depends on the track. Anyway, let's start with Post.
