The Reckoning (4 episodes)
Steve Coogan stars as the now disgraced British DJ and serial sex offender Jimmy Saville. It's quite atsounding just how much damage he did to many young lives with his wicked and abhorrent behaviour yet he had the ear of Maggie Thatcher who loved him (she obviously had no idea of his crimes although it seems that her advisor Robert Armstrong may have warned her about him as many rumours abounded) and eventually he received a knighthood for his charity work and even received a papal knighthood from the Pope (perhaps less suprising given the Catholic church's notorious track record on these things). His crimes didn't come out until after he died in 2011 and this lead to a purge against similar 'personalities' of the time including Rolf Harris who is now in prison. As a TV docu drama this is as good as it gets. Coogan is spot on with all the very recognisable mannerisms that Saville had and the BBC don't let themselves off. It was originally an nvestigation by their rivals ITV that brought the crimes to light and they also produced this, allbeit for the BBC. 10/10

Series 2 of Foundation. The scale of it is impressive indeed and it must have cost Apple a fortune to make. Great TV though and an excellent source to use for sci-fi. The start of this season was a bit confusing as it's seemed a long time since series 1, but as episodes go on things get clearer. Top sci-fi.

The Continental Action/Crime/Drama 8/10 This John Wick prequal gives us the back story to both Winston Scott (played by Ian McShane in the Wick movies) and his faithful concierge Charon (played by the late Lance Reddick in the Wick movies) as Winston is drawn back into a world he left far behind, long ago as he plots to secure control over the Continental Hotel in New York. Presented in three 90min episodes. The focus is more on the characters and their motivations than the Gun-Fu of the Wick movies, at least until the final episode. Then they bring it on ! A fun look into the history of Assassin Central, while leaving the door open to more early stories about the Continental and it's management.

Partygate
A one off drama documentary from Channel 4 chronicling the events that happened at Downing street that were referred to in the Sue Gray report. Governmental staff (there were many it seems) consistently and brazenly ignored their own governments health advice that was being put out because they were above it (they make the rules and don't have to follow them). The sheer disrespect shown to all those that had to bury their loved ones in very difficult cirmcustances during the pandemic is really highlighted here. Boris Johnson is painted as a bumbling buffoon with no real leadership qualities but then duh! However it's the sheer arrogance of his many aides (and by extension the governement) that truly hits home. 7/10

The Long Shadow 7 episodes
Another drama based on the so called 'Yorkshire Ripper' reign of terror between 1975 and 1980 in the Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford area of England. The West Yorkshire police force is put firmly under the spotlight here with some gerat performances from the likes of David Morrisey and Toby Jones. In terms of a bringing a true story to life this is as good as Chernobyl. Gripping, fascinating and ultimately very depressing. 10/10

Foundation S2
Adaption of Asaimov's Foundation sci-fi book series. Cranked up a notch from the 1st season, this is bigger, bolder and even more impressive. Lee Pace is great as the ruler of the galaxy ''Empire'' while Jared Harris plays the genius Harry Seldon who inspires a religion (being the name of the series) and whose technology could bring down Empire. Many episodes are so cinematic they should be seen at the theatre. A sci fi triumph in scale that easily matches Star Wars and Dune for my money. The only slight down note is actress Lou Lobbel's English accent is less than pristine, often waivering towards her native African accent too much at times. It's quite distracting! 9.5/10

The Woman In The Wall 6 episodes
This BBC drama is set in Ireland and references the so called 'Magdalene Laundries' that existed for 100's of years in Ireland as well as USA, Sweden and even Australia They were mostly catholic run work houses (or asylums) for 'fallen' women that had sex outside of marriage, often getting pregnant and then having nowhere else to go. This focuses on the story of a group of women whose children were taken away from them and in particular one lady called Lorna played by Ruth Wilson (Luther and The Affair). The writers take a suspense drama approach and Wilson is absolutely superb. Well worth watching and will no doubt garner another award for Wilson. 9/10

^ yep agreed. Sheen and Tennant are so much better in Staged, a zoom based 'improvised' comedy show. I laughed a lot. Check it out!
Was hoping to review The Woman In The Wall. This is brilliant but the BBC have not released the final episode yet and I will have to wait (not very patiently) until next Sunday. Ruth Wilson is tremendous and the story is great. So much to like including a very creepy sociopathic bitter old nun played to the hilt by Frances Tomelty.

Good Omens season 2. It was never going to be as good as the first season, but it had its (few) moments. I hope there won't be more but am afraid there will be.

Love and Death
This tv dramatisation of events surrounding a criminal case in the early 80's comes hot on the heels of another one about the exact same thing (''Candy''). This one stars Elizabeth Olsen as Candy Montgomery who instigates an affair with a married man Alan Gore (played here by the excellent Jesse Plemmons). Written and produced by David E Kelley this has all his trademark courtroom stylings and is a lot different to the Hulu production of a year ago that more dismissive of the court case. This one makes it a grand affair although the facts as presented are no different. Overlall I felt this had more quality but was slightly less real feeling. Jessica Biel was made to look much more like the actual protagonist then the ridiculously gorgeous Olsen. That said she and Plemmons act their socks off to create a believable chemistry that you would not expect given their physical types. 8/10

Yellowjackets S2
Great female ensemble cast and always very riveting. Lauren Ambrose is the latest actor to join, 'one out one in' but can't say who the 'out' is as that would be a spoiler! 9/10

My wife and I finished series 1 of Invasion the other night. Quite good overall, but some odd moments ruined it a little. Series 2 has started, but I'll wait for all episodes before continuing. 7/10

^ They've got 2 episodes of S2 out so far and it looks the budget has been upped a bit. I found S1 a bit underwelming accept for one episode in a house that ramped up the excitement somewhat (ep 5 I think). It then lost the momentum for me but that could be down to the then budget constraints perhaps (most of Apple's sci fi budget probably goes on Foundation!).

Invasion SE01 This one totally passed me by (2021), but I started with 2 episodes tonight. It's a slow burner for sure and it's purely character driven, so don't expect martians and ray guns and tons of sh*tty CGI. Follows individuals from all over the world as they are slowly experiencing the commencement of an alien invasion: An old retiring sheriff from Idaho, a Japanese JASA comms expert, an Indian-American doctor dealing with an unfaithful husband, a bullied English schoolboy and a Navy Seal in Kandahar. I love shows like this and series 2 has just started as well - great stuff.

^Citadel. I think Amazon has so much invested in it as a global franchise that they can't back out.
I initially enjoyed it as dumb campy fun, but then it got even more ridiculous while being predictable and telegraphing each of its ridiculous plot twists as it was trying to trick the viewer to feel good about figuring things out to mask the ridiculousness. |

That's a pity, I liked it too. Instead no doubt Amazon are pushing on with that horrible Richard Madden thing (forgotten the name its so bad).

I'm on season four of Black Mirror. I know it got a lot of great reviews, but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Some episodes have been good, and it's all really well done and have great actors, but I find it somewhat overrated. I will continue watching it, though.
I have also started on Better Call Saul. And, I wish I had done so earlier. I thought Breaking Bad was great, and Better Call Saul is just as good. Bob Odenkirk is such a great actor, perfect for that role.
