All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Let's look at the topic this way:

Is Ian Anderson anywhere near to being the vocalist Robert Plant is?

Is anyone of Tull's guitarists anywhere close to being as influential/memorable as Jimmy Page?

Is anyone of Tull's bassists anywhere near as good as John Paul Jones?

How many drummers in the history of humanity can be compared to JOHN HENRY BONHAM????

Flute department: advantage, Tull.

Everything else: Led Zep!

A's: Is Plant as unique as Anderson in the singing department?
Martin Barre can rival Page any day of the week or least close to it.
Cornick, Glascock?
You are correct about Bonham - no argument there.

But in reality, it was in response to a member claiming Zeppelin were unanimously heads and shoulders above Tull in every musicians' respect. I disagree except the point about Bonham

^ Willie Dixon and Blind Willie Johnson were the best lyricists Zeppelin ever had. Might as well throw in Memphis Minnie and Robert Johnson as well.

That being said, lyrically Zeppelin doesn't hold a candle to Ian Anderson.

Sad but true Confused

When you have a band of 4 songwriters and nothing they ever did came remotely close to Ian Anderson's lyrics says a lot Shocked

...and then there's "Stairway to Heaven", which strangely enough (although being lyrically great) Plant refuses to perform live anymore.

What's that all about?

While I don't think Barre is earth-shattering by any stretch, I think Page is not quite as revelatory as many music-listeners contend. Still highly respectable and influential. Jones and Bonham are what make the band for me.

"With Zeppelin's music and my lyrics, we could really have something."  -- Ian Anderson to an unamused Robert Plant, circa 1970

Even Bonham admitted Barlow was England’s best ever drummer

I’ve ordered the Broadsword set. There’s 4 studio albums on it lol. Hopefully it sounds good

From the end of the 1960's up to the end of the 1970's they both created plenty of fantastic music. But Led Zeppelin's weakest albums are much stronger than Tull at their worst - in the era that counts. And as Zeppelin last release came out before the eighties had started, we don't have four additional decades of mediocrity from them. And that's a big plus.

So LZ it it.

Plant's voice can be quite rough at times, but he still clears Anderson easily. Anderson can be quite annoying honestly. The instrumental talents of LZ impresses me more as well, but then again, I don't like Tull enough to listen to them a lot.

haha I forgot about that song Big smile (not intentionally btw). It does have great lyrics indeed.

Maybe Plant knows he can't sing in range anymore, which would bring the song a disservice.

Or maybe he's tired of singing it, like it happens many times with bands and artists performing the same song over and over...
