It's well-worth another listen. It's Better by Far than the album that came before it and The Album that came after it.

That's a great song and Legends of a Mind sounds like my kind of compilation album. I'd forgotten "C'thlu Thlu" was on the Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night album. I read the lyrics to the song but I'm still none the wiser as to what it means. I can't even pronounce it, never mind understand it.

I will have to give 'Better By Far' a spin. I haven't played that album for ages!

Okay, then I better understand it, but could it not be a good idea to edit the previous post? ![]() |

It's not really a repeat post. All of the old Caravan album links were repaired and replaced this morning and I typed out the Caravan intro - copied from the Caravan album sleeve notes - this morning too.

I can see I'm not the only one who likes to repeat my posts, even I quote them when I do it.

A-Z of Canterbury Scene Artists
CARAVAN "What does the name CARAVAN mean to you? The mainstream standard? The silhouetted palm tree and camel on boxes of dates at Christmas? They seem influenced by their name - those long swooping lines, something nomadic about it, probably the flute. The flute playing Sahara bird flight solos hovering over the camel-train, earth magic, soft machine and sky. It's nearer to us than Africa though, like Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar they home in from the east. Who knows what you will find, this is a journey at the end of the 20th century, lift the yashmaks and see little bubbles of sound breaking through dry sound. CARAVAN making huge music constructions right out there in the open where everyone can see, each tune constructed, built up with layers of sound, different textures, some delicate and filmy like gauze - coloured lights, see-through tights - others heavy and stomping like old desert blankets loaded with North African memory-dust. Underneath, the drums burst through, powerful, excellent drums - clean, driving and pointed drums....." - Caravan album sleeve notes Pye Hastings guitar, vocals Richard Coughlan drums Dave Sinclair keyboards, vocals Richard Sinclair bass, vocals ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:25 |

A-Z of Canterbury Scene Artists BRAINVILLE There are some bands who come along sounding like no band you've ever heard before and that's certainly the case with the wonky music of Brainville. They're listed here as Canterbury Scene, but this is more like Avant Prog and not to my tastes at all, although I know there are some progheads here who will love this kind of offbeat, experimental music - and if the off-kilter, slightly mad singer reminds you of Daevid Allen of Gong, that's because it is him. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:30 |

THE BOOT LAGOON A Canterbury Scene band who actually live within sight of the dreaming spires of Canterbury Cathedral, which makes a nice change. The Boot Lagoon are close to Hatfield in musical terms, if not geographically, so you wouldn't want to boot their eponymously-titled EP into the River Stour, although the plain beige EP cover doesn't exactly inspire interest. I'm sure they've made a big splash in Canterbury though, but the prospects for The Blue Lagoon are looking a bit murky in the rest of the country where they're virtually unknown outside of the progosphere. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:29 |

![]() BIG HOGG A Scottish sextet who are a long way from Canterbury, but close to Hatfield, if you catch my drift. Why not go the whole Hogg and check out their entire discography, which shouldn't take long as there's only one of three albums currently available on You Tube. In the rich pageantry of Canterbury Scene music, this virtually unknown, smoking hot band should be up there with the big beasts. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:29 |

I'm looking forward to listening to all of Caravan's albums again, including "The Album", and when it comes to the best Canterbury Scene music, Caravan trail behind no one.

Joy of a Toy by Ayers is a wonderful gem......easily 4 stars for me......with Soft Machine and Caravan members playing on some of it.
