I echo this as well. I'm not a big fan of Close to the Edge either, even though that seems to be the one most people on here will recommend first. Their two previous albums (The Yes Album and Fragile) are IMO much more interesting, and different enough from Edge that you might be able to get into them regardless of what you thought of that one.

Also, OP, based on what you've liked so far you might dig the album Polygondwanaland by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. The opening track is a little intense (but brilliant IMO), but make it past that and I think you'll at the very least like the remaining 35 minutes. It's got a mysterious vibe and intriguing lyrics, if you're into that sort of thing. And if you don't like that, they've also got some great psychedelic stuff.

I like "Polygondwanaland" by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, but it was really hard for me to hear the lyrics. It is definitely a good album though!

Now I see why you're trying to narrow things down.  Wish I could give you a whole bunch of free great music.  Still, it is your individual path to take, and you'll take it however you can.

Yeah their mixes tend to be very lo-fi and 60's-ish, so the lyrics usually don't come across very clearly.

I will say that this months album will be "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven!"

Also, do you know where I would make a post asking if a song I like is considered prog? It isn't anywhere in the prog archives but I have seen people calling it prog in other places.

^ Oh I think the 'Prog Music Lounge' with its general discussions would do well.   Don't be too surprised if it devolves into a debate about what is and/or is not Prog.   The horror... the horror.

My favorite albums are no longer "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" or "In the Court of the Crimson King." The top two are now "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor and "Until All the Ghosts Are Gone" by Anekdoten. The close runner-ups are "The Sky Moves Sideways" by Porcupine Tree, the single "Sad Rain" by Anekdoten, and "Polygondwanaland" by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

Massive thanks to everyone who gave recommendations. And if anyone knows songs like these, don't be afraid to tell me them. Smile

Wow! You move fast. Guess my Camel-tip wasn't so spot on:) But that's cool. And those are some great albums. For me GY!BE in particular. Probably my favorite band of the 1990's/early 2000's era. They'se still great btw. I'm seeing them live soon - again. A genuinely cathartic experience. Before any other reccomendation, I think you need to hear F♯A♯∞ as well.

+Love pretty much all of King Gizzard and Polygondwanaland is the perfect introduction to them. Ever heard Black Midi? Their latest Hellfire is my favorite album of last year by quite some distance. It's something else for sure and a unique experience and concept (and maybe not for everyone) - that I'm still not finished digesting.

Since the OP is on a one album per month budget, Polygondwanaland might be a name your own price album on Bandcamp. It was a few months back.

I'll add a couple of suggestions to try.

Doomsday Afternoon by Phideaux and East of Eden by Talk Talk.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a very good band, but it is post-rock not progressive rock. Wink

In post-rock, I recommend you these well-known bands: God Is An Astronaut, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Talk Talk, ...

Music can be many things simultaneously. How are they not progressive?

^This touches on the everlong debate of progressive vs prog. On this site, post/math is a subgenre, so we go with that. But, I think it's fair of some people to think of prog rock and post-rock as two different genres with similar qualities that can overlap.

Its not that I move fast, its that I have been listening to "In the court of the Crimson King" and "Journey to The Centre of the Eye" like they were an addictive drug for the past year because I didn't know there was other music like it and I have the time to listen to songs online (although I much prefer vinyl) to see if I like them for most of the day.

I listened to F♯A♯∞ and really liked it. I will make sure to look at other albums by them! This is definitely going on my "Vinyl to get" list.

I was aware of the concept of black midi, but I had never heard of the band. I tried to listen to that song, but it just hurt my ears. Maybe my ears are just sensitive today, it happens, but as of right now that song hurts my ears.

Progressive rock, post-rock, krautrock; its all the same to me. As long as the music is good I couldn't care what genre its in!

I listened to the most popular song by God Is An Astronaut  (according to Spotify, the "most trustworthy" source), Frozen Twilight, and I liked it.
I listened to the most popular song by Sigur Ros (also determined by Spotify), Hoppipolla, and I didn't like it. The vocals threw me off. Although this is subject to change on future listening.
I listened to the most popular song by Mogwai (once again determined by Spotify), Take Me Somewhere Nice, and liked it.
I already listened to some Talk Talk and liked it, as recommended by mathman0806.

To me getting two new favorite albums in favor of two previous ones, in a day or two is lightning fast. To state something like that would take years (if I actually have a favorite album). But we're all differnet and it's really none of my business.
