^ Really glad especially that you liked Bubu's Anabelas. That's a challenging listen for many an experienced Progger (the more mainstream ones) due its more out-there qualities. And we share a not like for Yes' Close to the Edge album, a rarity here it seems, which might help a bit in suggesting enjoyable music. I often have been told not to throw new people to Prog off the deep end (cough, Magma, cough). Really pleased that you took the time to listen and comment. It's very common that people asking for recommendations never comment on the choices or come back to the thread. Sometimes you get a vague, "Great suggestions everyone, keep them coming" which makes me wonder if they checked them out. I do try to base my recommendations on what people say they like usually.
At some time, maybe now, you might enjoy Godpspeed You! Black Emperor. Lift Your Skinny Fists lIke Antennas to Heaven is something of a masterpiece. It is on the more ambient side. It's a trip. You seem to like more the mellower side of prog. I understand that you didn't like Yes' Close to the Edge, but you might give a chance to some of their mellower songs, such as:
Turn of the Century And You And I Madrigal Awaken In the Presence Of Also since you liked Renaissance's debut I would suggest also their albums: Turn of the Cards Ashes Are Burning Novella Scheherazade and Other Stories Try also Genesis' album Selling England by the Pound |

I agree with you about Yes. It would not be wise to give up on them so easily. If he didn't like Jon Anderson's vocals then he could check out the Drama album and maybe also Fly From Here.

^^ Surprised you didn't mention The Shaggs considering my loving and quite wordy responses about the band in one of your recent polls.
I would have thought that the "entitled to not like" comment should go without needing saying. That said, all those bands you mention have diversity in their music, and I would hope that one would check a fairly wide range of material before deciding that one doesn't like the band period. There are bands that I generally dislike where I still enjoy some material. I'm more of an, I dislike an album or song by a band/artist thinker than I dislike a band commonly (especially if it has released a considerable number of varied albums). As with many bands, I love some Yes, like some Yes and dislike some Yes. I like the self-titled track on Close to the Edge a lot, but was intending a little light-hearted comment to go with "How did you read what I would like so well?????????" from the OP as I do seem to be very much in the minority when it comes to that specific album. Yes was one of the first prog bands I fell for with Fragile. And by the way, my last post was directed at the OP in case it's not clear since your post snuck in, maybe I should have quoted.

Following what Logan said: I loved "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It was beautiful. My second favorite album now. Even above "In the Court Of the Crimson King" by King Crimson. Honestly it might be my favorite. I could sense real meaning in each of the songs. "Storm" felt like it was about helplessness, and the feeling of hopelessness. The feeling that your life is happening around you, but you can't control its direction. "Static" felt like it was about panic; a drawn-out descent into hysteria. Although the religious bit kind of threw me off. "Sleep" felt like it was about nostalgia; a fleeting love for the past, the sorrow of it being gone, and a feeling of anger at its passing that turns to mindless rage that slowly morphs back into sorrow. As if the past was a pit and anger was their attempt at climbing out, only for them to fall back into sorrow. Every time the anger returns, it is another attempt at escape that fails. A cycle that they never escape from. As for the final song, "Like Antennas To Heaven...", I couldn't discern its meaning. It felt like there was so much meaning there, but it was something I was not yet ready to understand. This album is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. I will likely listen to this album many more times. Thank you so much for telling me about "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven." As for Magma, I did not end up liking their songs. But I might like it if I listen to it more. Seriously, thank you for telling me about that album. It is just amazing. Following what Gerinski said: I liked the other Renaissance albums (I already listened to a lot of them after my previous post)
I felt in-between on "Selling England by the Pound" by Genesis. (I also listened to it after my previous post) I didn't like the other Yes songs. Sorry. Based on this, are there any more recommendations?  Also, this is the nicest place on the internet I have ever found. |

I echo this as well. I'm not a big fan of Close to the Edge either, even though that seems to be the one most people on here will recommend first. Their two previous albums (The Yes Album and Fragile) are IMO much more interesting, and different enough from Edge that you might be able to get into them regardless of what you thought of that one. Also, OP, based on what you've liked so far you might dig the album Polygondwanaland by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. The opening track is a little intense (but brilliant IMO), but make it past that and I think you'll at the very least like the remaining 35 minutes. It's got a mysterious vibe and intriguing lyrics, if you're into that sort of thing. And if you don't like that, they've also got some great psychedelic stuff.

I agree and I personally enjoy just buying stuff on a whim without hearing it first but not everyone is like that. These days most people (especially younger folks) probably listen on youtube first.

With streaming taking over, it's just not a thing in general anymore. It's only really relevant if you still actually buy stuff. So it's not really a matter of listening on youtube first, but listening on youtube only. I do tend to do this with albums by artists I'm already familiar with. E.g. recently I bought In The Wake of Poseidon without ever hearing a single second of it before. I think the only times I've really spent money on an album completely blindly was on The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Moonmadness. Moonmadness because I repeatedly failed to get into Camel despite feeling that I should like them. So I thought spending hard-earned cash on an album would be a good way to force myself to like them (I ended up loving the album). Six Wives was because it was like three bucks and I had to add another item to a Discogs order to get to the min. order amount. Honestly glad I didn't pay much more than that for it but that's neither here or there. I guess I'm getting a bit off-topic, but what I'll say is that it's fun to go in blind, but seeing as my monthly CD budget is like enough for 5 albums, I don't really feel like taking my chances, so YT has been a godsend. And it works the other way as well, sometimes I don't think something sounds like it would be for me, but since trying something on YT doesn't cost me anything, I might as well have a quick listen. Not in a million years would I have bought a KMFDM album blind, but thanks to YT I've now learned about them. Then again, they're not prog in the slightest, so I'll yet y'all get back on topic.
