I am quite new to prog and I was looking to see if anyone had any recommendations. The two albums I have listened to and really like are "In the Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson and "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" by Nektar. I tried listening to other albums by King Crimson and Nektar, but I didn't like any of the songs (with two exceptions from "red" by King Crimson).
Does anyone know and songs that are similar to those two albums? If it helps, I like all the songs in those two albums. |

Fair enough, but your tastes will have to expand somewhat if you're going to continue to enjoy progressive art rock. Try Renaissance, early Genesis, Bo Hansson, the Enid, Sebastian Hardie, maybe UK. Best of luck in your journey ~ |

I'd say just try the big ones. Genesis, ELP, Pink Floyd, Camel, etc, etc. Maybe throw in some Zappa, prog metal or more modern stuff if you're feeling more adventurous. As long as you keep trying new stuff, you'll find more that you'll like I'm sure.
If you like In the Court, you'll probably like their second album, In the Wake of Poseidon. Side 1 is often called a copy of side 1 of Court. It's very similar, and close in quality.

Also, have you tried the album In The Wake Of Poseidon also by King Crimson? It's very similar. Also, no one mentioned Yes yet which I find a bit odd. Close To The Edge is usually considered to be their ultimate prog album (and one of the very best in the entire genre). I also suggest some early Pink Floyd being that you like Nektar. You should listen to the Meddle album and especially Echoes.

I tried the suggestions I got from AFlowerKingCrimson, Stressed Cheese, and Atavachron and these were the songs I liked:
I liked Cadence and Cascade, In the wake of Poseidon, Peace - A theme, and Peace - An end in "In the Wake of Poseidon" by King Crimson. I liked Meddle by Pink Floyd (and really liked echoes) I liked Take A Pebble in "Emerson, Lake & Palmer" by "Emerson, Lake & Palmer" I also liked (even though it was not recommended here) Lost, but not Forgotten and Myth of a White Jesus in "The Devouring" by Djam Karet. I randomly found it and liked it. Based on these, are there any other songs I should definitely check out?

From Pink Floyd, I suggest "The Embryo", "Interstellar Overdrive", "Astronomy Domine", "A Saucerful of Secrets" and the "Atom Heart Mother" suite. Also Hawkwind, like music from In Search of Space. Also Grobschnitt, maybe off Solar Music Live. I also will recommend Gong's The Isle of Everywhere and Master Builder. I think there's lot of Krautrock you might get into. Try Ash Ra Tempel's "Traummaschine". And try Swans' "The Sound".
I find Bubu's Anabelas has some of those In the Court qualities, but it may be too much for you. Welcome to the forum. |

Also I'd just like to say if you're new to prog, sometimes it might take a little longer for an album to sink its hooks in. At least from my experience, and maybe some other posters can back me up on this. But generally we tend to like music that's more repetitive more easily, and prog rock often tends to be a bit more unpredictable. That means that it doesn't become familiar until a couple listens. Now, this generally isn't really a problem (and I'm not going to pretend prog rock is rocket science), but there are definitely a good amount of prog rock albums that I ended up liking much more than I'd expected based on my first listen. Whereas with more accessible poppy albums I tend to have the opposite (I really get into them quickly but then become bored with them rather quickly too).
So what I'm getting at I guess is, that, when you don't really like an album too much on first listen, or only like a couple of songs off of it, it might be worth it to give it another spin or two. Of course, it's tempting to just move on to something that seems more interesting, but listening to something that you're already sort of familiar with through a previous listen legit can make a difference. I guess it also doesn't help that with streaming being the main way people listen to music, it's easier than ever to just move on to the next thing (which is why I'm glad I'm still a physical music collector), but that's a whole nother story I guess.

Have you checked out the "Top Prog albums (all time)" search function?
There you may select the sub-genres you want and, if you want to, the years you want and countries of the bands. If you are new to prog and based on what you liked so far, I would recommend checking out Symphonic, Crossover and RPI (if you don't mind lyrics in Italian, although there are some RPI albums sung in English too). As others have said, with Prog it is a good practice to listen to the albums at least 2 or 3 times before deciding that "you don't like them", much of Prog takes some repeated listening to sink in, and more so when you are still a newbie to the genre. Seems like if "In the Court of the KC" is liked, then the next album ("In the Wake of Poseidon") would also be liked, since quite similar. Same for Nektar's "Tab in the Ocean" after the first album.

I did end up liking "In the Wake of Poseidon" but I didn't like "Tab in the Ocean" because my favorite part of "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" is that it tells a story (that is also why it is my favorite album), and I couldn't sense any storyline in tab in the ocean. |
