We could put them in proto-post-rock. Wink

I personally don't disagree that they should be in Post Rock

The PA forums already are an all-music site. After all, who would've expected to find Talk Talk on a Prog-Rock website? Wink

Indeed, and what on earth is this top 40 band GENESIS doing here???!!!

We should thank our lucky stars that Phil Collins' solo albums aren't listed here on PA too. Tongue

^ the only reason many consider them proto-post is because the term post-rock wasn't ivented until a review by Simon Reynolds describing Bark Psychosis' 1994 "Hex." Musically though many consider Talk Talk to be the first post-rock act however some even point to GLenn Branca (who i think should be on the site :)

Still doesn't make sense. All other Talk Talk albums are non-prog. The only two post-rock are those two albums so what's crossover about it? It is post-rock not ALMOST post-rock :D

If bands had multiple tags like JMA and MMA, the problem would have been solved easily. Considering the single genre tag we got, the crossover tag works fine with Talk Talk IMO. And like you said, the "post rock" name came later than 1991. So putting the post rock tag would be just as confusing. Confused

^ no it wouldn't! Lots of artists and tags are given tags on this site where the tag came long after an album.

The first three Talk Talk albums are new wave pop. The second are post-rock. Not crossover, not half-jazz / half-Indo raga, they are post-rock.

By that logic early prog should be crossover because the term progressive rock wasn't even invented yet.

It was simply called art rock.

What's confusing is that a clearly post-rock band is in crossover!

Like I said, I do not mind the crossover tag for them. Sometimes, some bands remain in crossover because they are moved around from genre to genre, nobody wants them (but still thinking they deserve to be on PA somehow LOL). I wonder how TT ended up in crossover. That was way before my time with the team.

There are other bands that are in my opinion in the wrong place like Anathema in experimental/post. If i remember right The Gathering are experimental post as well.  I think they were a fit there because they don't fit anywhere else. I don't know. The multiple tags would have been the easy solution (genre tag per album obviously).

Anyway, I think, Prog Lounges should only be for Prog artists accepted by PA archive. Otherwise it's not possible
to draw the line, and what should be the difference from General Music Discussions.

I don't know if Phil Collins was ever formally rejected for Prog Related (please do correct me if I am wrong), but he conceivably could be added under Prog Related with reference to section 3. Having said that, I think it's more complicated than just meeting the requirements of only one of those sections. Some folks do consider some of his material as a bit proggy, though only at the song-level and not at the album-level. Admittedly it's a hard pill to swallow once you give a listen to Sussudio.

Actually, I think that allowing non-Prog artists in the whole PA forum is another step away from being only a Prog site
- whatever one might think about it.

Hi,

And this is the reason why I think that the band needs to be looked at with its history, not just one album, or two very different albums, or maybe three of them. In the end, there will be some kind of idea of their music and work, that ends up in one location better than the other.

As it is, right now, each album being done by whatever idea and method of the day, and then left there, only for us all to disagree some 10 to 15 years later, and find ... we can't change anything, so it stays "wrong".

All in all, I would think that sooner or later the multiple tags will make it tough all around. And confusing ... when a new fan, will immediately ask ... why? and how is it so and so? And many of us don't even know how to reply to that as is visible in so many posts. We don't, as much as I like, study the efforts in the music itself. We simply label it and say GOODBYE!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

multiple tags means under each album, the subgenre is mentioned. Not confusing at all. And helpful with artists that have changed sound, try different things and so on. This thing exists on the JMA and MMA sister sites and it works nicely.

For example, check out the artist page of Miles Davis on JMA:
