I've found so far about 10 Prog Metal albums I like, and about 20 of other Metal. That is about 7% of my music collection.

David, which are the 10 PM albums you like? We might be able to point you in the direction of something similar?

Give the first two Circus Maximus albums a try, Paul... Wink

You'd think he would try listening to that because he says he likes DT, but I have my doubts.

It's just a question of finding the time... I still have all of the albums to listen to in the 2nd Symphonic Metal poll as well as somehow finding the time to listen to most of the albums (excluding Avant Prog) in the 4th Modern Prog poll. Smile

I like many progressive metal bands but not all the genre. In fact like progressive rock and post-rock, and also classic rock. Smile

There's always an excuse, isn't there?
You showed off and mocked me once saying you listened to progressive metal before I ever did. And yet you have never explored the genre beyond two bands.

How many Dream Theater albums have you listened to? I'm curious, sorry about that... Stern Smile

^ I've just done a quick count... I have 33 (mostly Symphonic) Metal CD's in total, including 6 albums by Dream Theater, but nothing by Ayreon so far. Embarrassed

Paul, I agree that time is of a premium for many of us; that's why I haven't gotten around to the new DT!

Your approach however seems to be rather 'scatter gun'. If a fellow forum member, knowing my tastes, directed me toward a particular album, I'd listen, because there's a greater chance that I'd like it than from my own random trawling... Smile

^ My approach to music is the total opposite from "scatter gun". I always listen to artists and albums in alphabetical and chronological order. Smile

I didn't ask how many you own, but how many you have listened to so far.
6 albums you say? Which ones? DT have released 15 albums + A Change of Seasons + a couple of releases of songs that have not made it onto albums.

It is absolutely NOT the total opposite of scatter gun. You may always listen to artists and albums in alphabetical and chronological order, but the way you find those artists and albums definitely tends to be scattergun, and you definitely tend to (repeatedly) ignore suggestions for things you might enjoy more. 🙄

You are a stubborn, obstinate and obtuse person. But I do enjoy reading your posts, as you amuse me with your bloody-mindedness and wilful ignorance. Carry on!

You're right.  I'm not keen on Train of Thought at all. I only bought it on the strength of Dream Theater's previous albums and I've only listened to it once. Thumbs Down

I know I'm as guilty as anyone in this regard, so this will be my last post concerning this particular side-alley, but I do find it amusing how so many of these threads swiftly become Paul-orientated.. Smile Paul, your approach is one of a very organised scatter-gun. Alphabetical it may be, but it's still random and therefore time-consuming. How many albums have you listened to and discarded as not to your tastes? You say there are some PM albums you really enjoy. Well, Nick, Cristi and I would be more than capable of drawing you up a list of 10 albums you'd have a very significant chance of enjoying very much... but you don't want any help.. Confused

Good bands use metal as only a part of their sonic palette; other bands use the term to market themselves...

Usually but not always...

I have a couple of Dream Theater albums (the earlier work), two Queensr˙che albums (Operation Mindcrime and Empire), two Savatage albums (of which I actually only really enjoy one: Gutter Ballet) and I think that's about it.
I've listened to much more, also from these same bands, but most of it leaves me rather indifferent or is more of the same or just annoys me (especially when djent and the double bass drum seem to become something obligatory without doing it justice to the music...); to my ears it is often very formulaic (as is a lot of music, prog included, anyway).

Train of Thought is my least favourite Dream Theater album, so I'm hardly likely to give it a thumbs up. Smile

Nobody uses the thumbs down emoticon to express dislike for an artist or album, only you. It feels arrogant TBH.
