Name ten prog releases from the Naughties that you see have been sadly overlooked (less than 100 ratings in the PA database).

I think I maybe have ten of those. 🤔
Pretty much most more modern prog is rather overlooked on PA. There’s a whole lot of melancholic and metallic prog from Poland, but it seems that only Riverside has managed to become well known. The Pinkroom and Votum albums you mention are both fantastic, and there are several other Polish bands who have also put out some great albums in the same vein. Some might say that Riverside has had more success because they are make better music, but I don’t think that is at all the case (and I’m a fan of Riverside, so I’m not knocking them). In a way, it’s more surprising that band like Votum and Pinkroom, who are more “conventional”, have not made more of an impact, than that bands like Koenji Hyakkei or OOIOO have been overlooked. After all, they are definitely far more accessible, and more melodic. Beyond the ten or so albums I have, I recognise several names that are on my “to listen to” list. There’s not much there that I’ve not heard of at all, so I guess it’s always possible that most albums listed here might not necessarily be overlooked, so much as not yet looked at. It will be interesting to see how people react to the albums in your list, or the albums people list for themselves. |

^ I’ve not done so well from that list. I own only two (although those two do go from A to Z! 😜), and know of only a further three. But given that you and I have similar tastes much of the time, I will certainly investigate those I am unfamiliar with.

Ok, at the risk of being boring, since so far I have only been reacting to the lists of others, I own seven of these nine! I guess that means I need to check out Bark and Bauer. |

Thanks to your suggestion, I tried all of these. I LOVE Gonin-Ish! Another Mind is stellar Hiromi. The Elder is pretty good. Last Fair Deal Gone Down definitely deserves more attention. Can't find the Schizofrantik album. The rest don't resonate with me. Ruins is always too out there for me--like Primus, Zappa, rollercoasters, and video game music. |

I own five of these so I thought I'd try the other three. Salvation is not my cup of tea (I've tried them before--other albums. Post Rock with death metal growls?!) I really like the Bauer album--will be trying to pick it up for my own collection. It has the spacious, atmospheric places that I need and like. Gargamel Watch for the Umbles is interesting. This album feels a little underproduced and underdeveloped. Poor vocals and questionable arrangements. It would incite me to put them in a "band to watch" category and explore successive releases. |

There are several here that I had not heard though I've heard music by all bands listed except for the last three. Really like the trip-hoppy techno jazz of Irmin Schmidt & Kumo. Like a modern Art of Noise. William D. Drake is always about lyrics and Talking Heads/cabaret-like music. Not my cup of tea. Always a pleasure to hear Sharron Fortnum's voice and the quirky folk music of North Sea Radio Orch. From Monument to Masses The Impossible Leap in One Hundred Simple Steps is entertaining--most interesting for listening to all the radio/television samples. The music is take-it or leave it Post Rock--most interesting, IMO, for the bass and drum interplay. I like Set Fire to Flames Telegraphs in Negative/Mouths Trapped in Static quite a little. Not sure why. Not every song, but the songs in general are less dense and protracted than GY!BE. Definitely an album that I'll be picking up and reviewing. Prolific experimental Ambient/Drone/Ethnic/Electronic artist Rapoon collaborated with Birds of Tin only once that I can find. Can't find anything titled "Monomyths." |

I like the Ahvak debut. Aranis and Cheer-Accident are always a pleasure to hear. Both bands whose lexicons go sadly under-appreciated here (and everywhere). I really like the sound of the songs I sampled from Dreams No Longer Hesitate -- something I'll be exploring more. The sound recording/engineering on Time Of Orchids Namesake Caution is a problem for me. Too raw and "unfinished." The Romansch/klezmer sound of Hamster Theater Carnival Detournement should be right up my alley but I couldn't find more than one song to sample. Weirdly, though the sound production on The Book Of Knots Traineater is better, I think I like the debut better--but thanks for re-acquainting me with this band. Upsilon Acrux Galapagos Momentum is like an exercise in monomaniacal Robert Fripp patience. Brave soul: You definitely like your music angular and not groovy and straightforward! I'll definitely be going back to The Book of Knots, Combat Astronomy and probably Ahvak. Thanks! Edited by BrufordFreak - April 19 2022 at 14:38 |

I really love Out There from Rick Wakeman, and I don't think many people pay much attention to that one. His Retro albums were rather nice, too.
