Okay, instead of "dreadful", I'll say I disliked Therion's first album intensely. How's that?

Deaf Records is probably a joke name - deaf-death. To a non-native English speaker, might sound the same. I would never call music I dislike "dreadful". Disliking it is more than enough. ![]() I would call "dreadful" an artist (or genre) I usually like that has released something I find bad, weak, uninspired etc. ![]() |

^ Don't worry, I haven't turned a deaf ear to your entreaties in support of Therion. It's thanks to you and Logan's support that Therion are still here in the poll when I came close to dumping them altogether after hearing their dreadful Death Metal debut. By the way, Therion's first album was released on Deaf Records, which seems very appropriate, considering it's about as welcome as a nuclear blast.

You're dissing Therion again because they started as a death metal band. In 1991, there was no symphonic metal so your post makes no sense. You're comparing oranges to potatoes here. Also Therion became very melodic once they became symphonic. Without the success of Theli and Vovin, there wouldn't be much symphonic metal as a genre.

KINGFISHER SKY: a Dutch band at the opposite end of the Symphonic Metal spectrum to Therion. In other words, Kingfisher Sky's melodic albums are actually very listenable.

It's good to know my updated Symphonic Metal list meets with your seal of approval and you have no further objections to the final line-up for Poll #2.

^ Okay, you win, I give in. I'll substitute Ayreon for Kingfisher Sky. At least the genuine Symphonic Metal bands will have a realistic chance of winning now that they're not up against mighty Ayreon in every poll.

Not the same thing. Ayreon are progressive metal but they're not symphonic metal. Can you just give it a rest. I wonder how many times does anyone have to tell you Ayreon does not belong in this poll. ![]() |

In that case, maybe you won't mind the Progressive Metal band Ayreon being included in a Symphonic Metal poll.

They are progressive because they often go beyond the verse-chorus-verse pattern, they are sometimes polyrhythmic, and they have experimented a bit. So I do not mind them being here on PA under progressive metal.

^ Yes, Therion made a welcome progression from an awful Death Metal band to a listenable Symphonic Metal band, so I guess that makes them progressive, even if they're not exactly Progressive Metal.

they created a new music genre more or less, this is progressive, isn't it?

Therion are listed as a Progressive Metal band here on PA, which confuses me even more, but then again, I'm easily confused at my age. ![]() |

From 1996 to present day, they have made symphonic metal. They are the most relevant creators of this kind of music. You can also skip their extreme metal phase. No one will judge.

Well good, should I miss the seventh poll, consider me now to have given a write-in vote for Therion's Vovin. A fine album and a reminder that I should listen to more Therion and friends.

Okay, due to unpopular demand, I'll keep Therion in the poll, seeing as they're listed primarily as a Symphonic Metal band on their Wikipedia page. I'll still listen to all of Therion's albums, although not necessarily all the way through from beginning to end.

Listen to the song Logan posted, it's from one of the most influential symphonic metal albums. I have already advised you to listen to the Theli album, I was hoping you would do it to see where symphonic metal started. I am also hoping you will/would enjoy the album or at least aspects and portions of it. I guess you are not that curious it seems.
