^ I don't think I could bear to listen to any more Therion albums after that first awful experience. Maybe I'll revert back to my original choice replacement of Kingfisher Sky, who are much more to my tastes. Thumbs Up

What I have already told was to start with their 1996 album. Nobody is forcing you to listen to anything you don't like. 

Like I said, excluding the creators of the genre is ridiculous, to put it kindly. Without the success of Therion's Theli and Vovin, there would not be much of a symphonic metal subgenre.

Well, they could get worse for someone who hates Symphonic Metal, but I am confident that it will get better for you, but it might take a few albums in before you start really liking things (I'm no expert but judging by another site).  Early Therion is not recommendable to those who dislike death metal and are into Symph metal (and not recommendable per this topic at least).  One thing that death metal and symph metal has in common for me aside from the metal aspect is  cheesiness, but one is more old moldy, kind of rancid and sour cheese that smells bad,  and the other is more like processed cheese.  To some both are in bad taste, but I can enjoy both death metal and symph metal, and am not above having some cheese in my diet (especially Stilton, which I know many find quite unpalatable).

I would not want to listen to music the way you do (full discographies from beginning to end) when it comes to many bands.  Swans is my current fave in PA, and I would have dismissed it had I started from the beginning.  I often look into the discography and tend to go with those albums first that the descriptors and reviews indicate that I might most enjoy (eventually I might want to try everything as other music by the band might prime me for new music avenues).
On the subject of cheese, Therion are about as appealing to me as mouldy Stilton. Tongue

I'm looking forward to checking out Swans' albums - eventually - when I revisit my series of Modern Prog  polls. Thumbs Up

You know me well enough by now to know that I always listen to an entire discography by an artist, even if I don't like everything I hear. I can't start with Therion's 1996 album and ignore everything that came before it. Confused

Listen to the song Logan posted, it's from one of the most influential symphonic metal albums. 
I have already advised you to listen to the Theli album, I was hoping you would do it to see where symphonic metal started. I am also hoping you will/would enjoy the album or at least aspects and portions of it. I guess you are not that curious it seems.

Therion are listed as a Progressive Metal band here on PA, which confuses me even more, but then again, I'm easily confused at my age. Tongue

Not the same thing. Ayreon are progressive metal but they're not symphonic metal. Can you just give it a rest.
