Elvis Costello - Trust
Sting - The Dream of the Blue Turtles
Robert Cray - Don't be Afraid of the Dark

This is next to impossible for me. I was going to post some time ago, but decided it was too hard, but after it being mentioned in a chat with Brendan, I thought I’d try and give it a shot. To make it slightly easier on me, I am listing only one album per band/artist, even if that choice of one is rather arbitrary at times. Even then, it’s hard for me, because I was a child of the ‘80s, so this was the music that surrounded me, on the tv and on the radio, played at the houses of my friends and family. I have tried, where possible, to choose my favourite ‘80s album as it was at the time, rather than now. Sometimes this is the same album, but in carrying out this exercise, I have realised how much my favourite has changed over the years.

There’s a lot I loved as child, and which I still do if I hear it again today, but which is no longer in my collection. But that is not particularly indicative of a change in taste, so much as my collection was overhauled when I transitioned from cassette to cd. I didn’t have the money to rebuy everything I owned, and had been doing so gradually over the years, to complement my new purchases. However, as the Internet made it easier and easier over the years to hear those older albums, I’ve bought fewer and fewer of the albums I owned on cassette, simply because I know I won’t listen to them often enough to justify the cost, when I know I can simply stream them.

So, anyway, what follows is taken from what remains of my ‘80s love in the ‘80s, in my cd collection today. I tried to keep it to 15, but it was too much of a struggle. I did manage to cut my much larger list down to 20, though. And 20 seems a nice round number….

David Bowie - Scary Monsters (1980)
Crowded House - Crowded House (1986)
The Cult - Sonic Temple (1989)
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration (1986)
Duran Duran -  (1981)
Peter Gabriel - So (1986)
Guns N’ Roses - Appetite for Destruction (1987)
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden (1980)
Jane’s Addiction - Nothing’s Shocking (1988)
Joy Division - Substance (1988)
Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987)
The Police - Ghost in the Machine (1981)
Iggy Pop - Blah-Blah-Blah (1986)
Queen - The Game (1980)
R.E.M. - Document (1987)
Lou Reed - New York (1989)
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead (1986)
Split Enz - Waiata (1981)
U2 - The Unforgettable Fire (1984)
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (1983)

(I left off a whole load of Kiwi bands/artists that I figure won’t be known internationally, which definitely helped cut my list down…)

by Michael Azerrad - even the author's description of large part of the bands portrayed
isn't particularly flattering, not least concerning Black Flag and Henry Rollins. Of other bands
profiled, let me mention Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Hüsker Dü, Butthole Surfers and Mission of Burma.

How about one more quotation from this book:

"The Butthole Surfers' obsession with a pop band like R.E.M. is a bit surprising. "I think we were fascinated by the amount of fame they were getting", says Coffey. "And they were easy subjects for redicule. But by the same token, we also had a certain fondness for some of their songs, like their radio hit songs. We'd say, 'Aw, this is horrible!' And then of course it would be in our heads for two weeks." (By 1987 they often ended shows with a demonic version of R.E.M.'s hit "One I Love.")
And of course, R.E.M. were already wealthy men by this time, unlike the Butthole Surfers. "I think we were jealous of them," Coffey says. "Hell yeah," Leary agrees. "Jealous as sh*t."
In Georgia their rickety van called it quits in spectacular fashion - as Haynes and Leary were pulling into a parking lot, the engine started smoking and quickly burst into flame. The two men bailed out of the van, Mark Farner in hand, and watched it burn."

I absolutely hated his previous two solo album (Arc & Talking) and TBH, this is isn't that much better, but at least, there is the return of the Hammond...

And one bloody great track.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

By the way, these two albums are very fine examples of Polish New Wave, and, especially Lady Pank, with
some lyrics which are amazingly critical towards the social system - in Polish though.

Lots of great stuff mentioned here already but two groups that haven't been mentioned that I really enjoyed ( and continued to enjoy) from the '80's that haven't been mentioned are:

Cabaret Voltaire- The Crackdown
                         Micro-phonies
The Covenant the Sword and the Arm of the Lord

and Shriekback- Care
                       Jam Science
                       Oil and Gold
                       The infinite
I should have been a pair of ragged claws
Scuttling across the floors of uncertain seas

A small quote from this book:

"Melody Maker interviewer: Are the Buttholes closer to God or Satan?
Gibby Haynes: God, definitely. Why take a chance?"

It's been nice! Covid restrictions have finally been getting lifted out here, so I'm able to enjoy more of the country. For instance, just went to Hiroshima last weekend for a strawberry-picking event, and the mall I visited later that day had a killer music store Smile Sometimes I wish I got to Japan now instead of back in 2020 when everything was in lockdown, because I don't have much time left here Cry

Thanks for your reply, Necrotica, and I hope that you'll enjoy your time left there. Smile

No, you misunderstood, I was talking about me. I know just a few bands. It was not a criticism of you.

Btw, I'm curious about how you define "best"?

I think the songwriting is great, the musicians are competent, the album is all killer, no filler.

Well, if talking about Danish Metal, I certainly prefer

Mercyful Fate  (DK)  -  Melissa   (1983)

Again, very influential band, I prefer King Diamond's solo albums though.

I was just praising a really good heavy metal album from Denmark. I recently re-listened and it was a lot of fun. Smile
