EPICA: a Dutch Symphonic Metal band, led by beautiful red-headed soprano, Simone Simons.

The hills are alive with the sound of Edenbridge who - despite the name - aren't from the Garden of England, but from over the hills and far away in Austria, and this is their stunning debut. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - February 27 2022 at 03:37 |

Again, true what you say, but symphonic metal was created by combining sounds of European power metal and gothic metal/gothic-doom. I think a band like Theatre of Tragedy was an influence on early symphonic metal. The "beauty and the beast" type of gothic metal in general. Therion's Theli and Vovin and the early sound of Nightwish shaped up the genre.

^ Some say that all metal are heavy metal. I didn't say that I embrace that take. Also, symphonic black metal is still symphonic metal, just as symphonic power metal is also symphonic metal. I, as you must know, know those differences. But still...

Not what I meant. All of them are metal, not heavy metal, but metal has become so diverse, there are big differences between subgenres. Edited by Cristi - February 26 2022 at 07:28 |

^ Some say all of them are heavy metal, some say black and death metal are "abominations". All is well with me.

true, but then again when somebody uses the subgenre "symphonic metal", they don't think about Dimmu Borgir. Symphonic black metal is totally different beast.

The thing here is, Epica and Nightwish uses operatic vocals and Dimmu Borgir mainly uses growling and screaming vocals. But the term is "symphonic", not "operatic". So, as long as a band uses symphonic instrumentation, it makes symphonic music. Clearly, Dimmu Borgir fits this criterion.

that's probably right, a band like Therion started making symphonic metal for real on their 4th or 5th album. They played death metal until that moment. Same situation with DB I guess. Someone on metalstorm described Euonian, jokingly of course, it's Nightwish with Emperor Palpatine on vocals. that's hilarious.

I am only interested in two metalhead's opinions here, yours and Ozgur's although I'm guessing you haven't heard the album then? I like that album and associate it with the likes of Epica, but I've been told at this forum that things that remind me of something else sound nothing alike and in this case it is a category of music that I have not researched much or explored deeply. My point often in such things as that it's important to look at the album or even track level when approaching topics such as these. Dimmu Borgir, for inatance, might then be said to only fit this series well enough for its tenth album (not that I'm claiming that). |

^ No man, we may have differing ideas. It is totally cool with me. But their albums in the new millennium (I wrongly said 1999, sorry) are clearly symphonic metal. Their previous stuff are surely melodic, but arguably they had symphonic vibes too. As far as I know, Dimmu Borgir was the first extreme (black or death) metal band that used fully-fledged symphony orchestras in their music. Or at least, they made it most widely known.

I think Ozgur is the only one who can make a fair judgement as he knows and likes Dimmu Borgir. Metalheads' opinions are divided on Euonian.

I'm no metal expert, but I think that Eonian (2018) by Dimmu Borgir would fit well enough with the likes of Epica. I think it depends on the album.

again Dimmu Borgir are a black metal band, on metal sites they're tagged as symphonic black metal and melodic black metal. Still I think they don't belong in a poll against the likes of Epica, Nightwish, Delain. Very different sounds. It's like having a Genesis against Agalloch in a poll because both are progressive (I'm exaggerating a bit, but you know what I mean).

Thanks for posting. I like Rite of Passage, so I'll keep Dimmu Borgir in the poll, and in addition, Archisorcerus says they're arguably the most symphonic band in the poll, so that's good enough for me.

Obviously, I've heard of all of the bands in the poll, or I wouldn't have included them, but I only own three debut albums in the poll, by Leaves's Eyes, Nightwish and Within Temptation, so they're the only albums I'm familiar with, although I'm intending to change that by listening to all of the albums in the poll, eventually.

I would not think that "if they don't get any better" (a subjective assessment) should be as important as "if they don't fit symphonic metal better". I quite like Dimmu Borgir (can't say I've explored lot) and based on my limited knowledge, I would think that you might like their more melodic and more symphonic recent albums (while still being in the black metal camp). You might want to give Eonian a go at some time. I think it's a very easy-listening album while maintaining some elements that you might not like (or normally like) - almost epic black lounge metal to me at times. I like the variety. Not posting this because I think it's most appropriate or you would like it particularly, but because I like it. EDIT: As to this poll, really not familiar enough to vote. ^ No. Dimmu Borgir is not-too-arguably the most symphonic band among them.
