They're called Shreddies - or mini Shredded Wheat. |

Then are you sure that Apocalyptica just don't get three Shreddies for breakfast? |

From Shredded Wheat and Shreddies, it's back to some guitar-shredding and the heavy Metal Opera of Avantasia.

Having just listened to Ayreon's outstanding debut album for the first time, I'm adding my vote to The Final Experiment - the clear winner in this poll.

Ayreon were beaten by Riverside in Cristi's first Progressive Metal albums poll, so I'm tempted to dip my toes into Riverside to find out what I've been missing out on all these years.

Very good idea, I like Riverside's first two albums quite a lot.

I can tell you as well that Riverside is much higher placed than Ayreon on my top 100 all-time Prog Rock albums list made in 2019 on basis of all the ratings on RYM and PA.

I think the problem with the above poll has been the inclusion of Ayreon which arguably is the only truly progressive album in an otherwise entirely symph metal oriented poll. Naturally therefore, most PA members will have voted for Ayreon, partly because they like prog... and partly because many forum members will be unfamiliar with many of the other recordings listed. If you has left Ayreon out, the results would have been more interesting.
Looking at this poll, you'd think that the Ayreon album was head and shoulders the better album than anything else listed, but if you look on Metal Storm, with ratings for 4 other debuts given by genuine Symph metal lovers, then the picture is somewhat different: Avantasia: 8.7 / Epica: 8.5 / After Forever 8.3 / Ayreon 8.3 / Delain 8.3

In that case, it's a good thing I didn't include Dream Theater in the poll too, or that would've really skewed the voting.

Interesting for me to read this, Jared, as it gives me a little more understanding of polls.

If I hadn't included Ayreon in the poll, I would have voted for Nightwish with "Angels Fall First", but it appears the angels have fallen at the first hurdle in this poll with no votes so far, even though it's usually the Norwegian entry that finishes last with nul points.

This is what happens when you copy paste lists from god knows where, when you make polls with artists you know nothing about. Dimmu Borgir is a black metal band with symphonic elements and atmospheres. It should not have been in the poll in the first place. You thumbing this down is hilarious. Spoiler alert - Therion started as a death metal band. They created symphonic metal ma bit later. I imagine the first album you will tolerate is Vovin from 1998.

^ I was being generous in giving Dimmu Borgir's debut a 2-star rating. The singer was dreadful, although to call him a "singer" is giving him far too much credit. A few singing lessons wouldn't go amiss, instead of growling his way through an entire album.
That's probably the first and last time I'll listen to any Black Metal and thanks for the warning about Therion. You deserve a thumbs-up for that.

Black metal vocals are different from death metal ones. The thing is that I bet the Dimmu Borgir vocalist can actually sing, but that kind of vocals he did there is a choice and definitely not easy to do. Same case for death metal growls. Just saying. And I do not like Dimmu Borgir, not my thing. Both subgenres are a hit and miss with me.

To be honest, I wish I'd never included Dimmu Borgir in the poll now, then I could have spared myself having to listen to those dreadful growling vocals on their debut album. Their second album can only get better, hopefully.
