I'm sorry, Paul, if my characterizing of your Symphonic Metal Heaven was a bit too rough, and I hadn't even seen all the albums when I did it, so my basis for doing it could be better - but what I saw was not quite what I expected, so I got myself a little chock.

There's absolutely nothing to apologise for. My Symphonic Metal poll selection is probably not what anyone expected, so you're not alone, and I've had far worse criticism from one or two others here, without mentioning any names.

I'll have a look at it tomorrow, Paul, but I can say that your use here of the term "Symphonic Metal" is not exactly according to the standard.

You're quite right. There's at least a couple of dubious Symphonic Metal entries (Ayreon & Evanescence) in the poll, but they're just too good to leave out.

And I can say that my comment was partly meant as fun.

But they didn't do a succesful career out of playing Metallica on cello. They did start it that way, though, and have used it again, every time less so. By their third album they almost did no covers, and then it was only as bonus tracks. But they have created some really beautiful music of their own since. Yet, when they do have come back to playing Metallica again live, I believe they have done it so much better. |

Well, I don't think, I'll say more in this matter than I've already written, Paul, except from adding that I had been looking at RYM's classifications, and as you know, I'm quite serious about Prog definition.

My point was that their career jump-started with the Metallica cover album. I may be wrong, but I think that if they had done their own music only, they wouldn't be nearly as known or popular as they are. This is pointless speculation of course. They're good at what they do and deserve their popularity, whether based on their own material or covers.

Apocalyptica's Metallica thingies were horrible. A real torment for the ears. Perhaps an electric bass guitar could have saved them.

For those who like Nightwish and want to hear a similar band, I recommend Xandria (see the last option here). Starcastle to Yes is Xandria to Nightwish.

After reading all of the positive and negative comments about Apocalyptica, I really need to check this band out for myself. I have a strong feeling I'm going to like them much more than Metallica, although that wouldn't be difficult.

Also if you like Rhapsody (of Fire), check Fairyland out. A clone band but still interesting and enjoyable.

Thanks. I liked Rhapsody of Fire when they performed as Christopher Lee's backing band. Edited by Psychedelic Paul - February 14 2022 at 07:17 |

^ That collaboration is one of the best things that metal music has ever seen!

The last time I posted a Christopher Lee video here, one unkind soul said he couldn't sing. I think the video above proves otherwise.

Mr. Lee was not a singer, but he definitely could sing! He even said once that he would have been an opera singer, if he hadn't been an actor.

Oh yes, I'm sure that Metallica covers album gave them a lot of promotion, but I don't think it's the Metallica covers that gave them their fan-base... if it had only been that album, I'm sure they wouldn't have become so popular, it would have been just a novelty. Yet, I do am sure that having released that album made people interested into later on hearing what else they were doing. |
