You've mentioned two, songwriting and performance, it might be "composition", "creativity", "originality", ability to reflect the Zeitgeist. I don't remember exactly, I just know that some Prog magazines when making reviews and ratings have used some criteria which can be said to give the rating to some degree character of objectivity.

That is at least an opinion some people find to be true, and I'm interested in hearing some more about that opinion.

Yeah, why use the word "objective" here? What would be a "subjective" criteria?

You've already mentioned one, just like it or not like it, and it could be due to it's Jazz and not Rock, or hundred others similar reasons, or find it too noisy due to an ear damage and so on.
It's only fantasy that set limit for how many ways of subjective evaluation one can find.
                      quality over quantity, and all kind of PopcoRn almost beyond

Yes, but "like it/dislike it" is the only subjective criteria, that's true.

But an objective review is for lack of a better word, boring. it's stating the obvious: like stating the genre, how many members in the band and what do they play, how many songs, some are fast and some are slow, there is one ballad, one long song and that many short ones etc.

Subjective reviews are the best, it's what the reviewer goes through when he/she has listened to the album.

"subjective" is all that which has something to do with oneself and not the music itself, and as a principle it's unlimited in number of possible "things".

I think and I feel something when i listen to music. So subjective is more relevant.

I'm not sure I understand for sure what you say there.
""subjective" is all that which has something to do with oneself and not the music itself"? What else is there? What about catharsis?

As a "principle"? What principle?

'What is "unlimited"? The music? objectivity? subjectivity? I don't get it... Confused

If I start a thread with this topic, you'll get the possibility to argue and discuss. Tongue

The ten key elements for me in what makes for a great album, or to put it another way, Max Factor 10. Tongue

 * Emotional Appeal
 * Originality
 * Power and Passion
 * Production & Arrangement
 * Replayability
 * Songwriting Technique
 * Technical Ability
 * Versatility
 * Vocal Ability
 * That Indefinable 'X' Factor

By the way, if you rate each of these ten key album factors out of ten, then that'll give you a final percentage rating out of 100. Smile

"Thank You Captain Obvious!" - as Cristi would probably say. Tongue

Thanks! I guess it must have been an okay "Max Factor" list to have garnered rare praise from Cristi. Tongue

Not least considering that he argued against "objective" criteria. LOL

Here's a rather unique Christian Reggae band who scores a ten from me for both Originality and Emotional Appeal. I like to Jah Wobble to these beautiful Lovers Rock songs, although it's more Wobble than Jah at my age. Tongue

Christafari - Try Jah Love

Christafari - Hosanna
