I'm hoping the reason no one else has voted for "Prognostic" so far is because they haven't yet heard the album, or it could just be that I'm in a minority of one again in preferring a recent album to a classic album. Smile

Hi PP,
Prognostic is a cd made of old live tracks and re -recorded/remasterd tracks isn't it ?
Moreover, their latest cds do not benefit from a very good distribution (here in Western Europe)... at reasonable prices

I didn't know that. I thought they were all brand new songs on the Prognostic album, so it looks like my prognosis was wrong again. No surprise there then. Embarrassed

To my ears The Strawbs were never very good at this rock-thing. This somewhat ruins quite a few of their albums for me. I always enjoy a handful - or at least a trio of songs on all their "classics". But there's too much half assed singalong pubrock (post 1970/1971), with Status Quo-like riffs in the mix. I have an extremely low tolerance for that. The end of the otherwise stunning opener Autumn on Hero and Heroine seriously annoys me so much I've made my own five minute-edit of it. But in their aqoustic folk/psych mode it's all quite lovely - and I love all their early easternflavored excursions. I've never checked out any of their post-70's albums.

1 From the Witchwood (1971)
2 Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios (1970)
3 All Our Own Work (1967/1973)
4 Dragonfly (1970)
5 Strawbs (1969)
6 Bursting at the Seams (1973)
7 Grave New World (1972)

their last couple have probably been their 2 best post 70s albums - The Ferryman's curse (the title track is a sequel to the Vision of the Lady of the Lake off Dragonfly, though IMO it's one of the weaker songs on that album), and "Settlement".  "Broken Hearted Bride" is pretty good too, and, although the production is poor, you might like "Deja Fou", with a lot of songs that are acoustic in nature.

The last part of Autumn is a gorgeous ballad that refers back to their folk roots.  I certainly can't see it as pub rock or with Status Quo type riffs.  A few other tracks could be considered pub rock though-why not? They were never completely a prog group anyway.  Albums like Bursting at the Seams showed they could do almost any style well, and with 4 songwriters and singers.  Too bad they blew up right after it!

Thanks for the reccomendations in the rest of the post. Regarding the last part of Autumn specifially - its the banal, childlike, singalongy song that rubs me the wrong way. It's like I get an allergic reaction and start to itch. Of course Strawbs are fully free to play make simple(ton) singalongs as well as play many pub rock-riffs as they like. And you are just as free to enjoy it. But I'm certainly not gonna listen to it, because it makes my ears bleed.

Haven't put the Strawbs on in yonks, but they used to get pretty steady spin time on the old hi-fi:

1.  Hero
2.  Grave
3.  Witchwood
4.  Sandy Denny & Strawbs
5.  Curios
6.  Ghosts
7.  Bursting

Both Prognostic and the Ferryman's Curse deserve mention, really nice albums for Strawbs fans but I'd start with this Core 7 first.
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

All I can say here is that I'm very fond of Grave New World - and I've said before. Big smile
