Imo the first modern prog album was either the first album by Echolyn (self titled) or Anglagard's hybris.

Anglagard > Present > Anekdoten > Spock's Beard > Marillion > Magenta

not necessarily in that order, but those are my top 4
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Quite a tough choice - particularly between Cardiacs, Swans, and PT - but even though I miss the OG version of "Radioactive Toy" from Tarquin's Seaweed Farm I have to go with On The Sunday. Swilson's early, oft Floydian cuts that went on to make up OTSOL remain some of my all time favorites of his.

I assume by "modern" we mean, quite literally, "modern history," which is anything after the Medieval period.

Gave my vote to Opeth, it didn't have any and surely deserves one. Great debut!

Personally I think Spock's Beard, The Light, heralded in a new age of prog. While I like Script more, both Marillion and IQ are a continuation of the style of Genesis but in a different take.
