    Posted: September 01 2021 at 11:46
Well, one thing I've learned in the past weeks is that my favourite prog albums of the 80s tend to be concentrated in the even-numbered years rather than the odd-numbered ones. Given the circumstances, 1986 is another damned fine year for the genre, methinks.

1. Thinking Plague - Moonsongs
2. Genesis - Invisible Touch (I regret nothing)
3. Univers Zero - Heatwave
4. Frank Zappa - Jazz From Hell
5. The Chick Corea Elektric Band - The Chick Corea Elektric Band
6. Adrian Belew - Desire Caught By The Tail
7. Harold Budd, Elizabeth Fraser, Robin Guthrie & Simon Raymonde - The Moon And The Melodies
8. Katra Turana - Kimera
9. Talk Talk - The Colour Of Spring
10. Motor Totemist Guild - Contact With Veils

Honourable mentions:
- Allan Holdsworth - Atavachron
- Ozric Tentacles - There Is Nothing

Strange list but genuine progressive rock was nowhere near the mainstream in the mid-eighties (Talk Talk isn't really progressive just yet, but its lovely art pop)

Wendy Carlos - Beauty in the Beast
Tangerine Dream - Green Desert (recorded sometime in the mid-70's)
Univers Zéro - Heatwave
Shub-Niggurath - Les Morts Vont Vite
Jac Berrocal - Hotel Hotel
Talk Talk - The Colour Of Spring
Thinking Plague - Moonsongs
Lindsay Cooper - Music for Other Occasions
News From Babel - Letters Home

Ah I just removed them as its just a 14 minute long EP - actually first released as a #7. But very close to the best progressive 14 minutes of 1986.

I was getting desperate by that stage, do Robert Cray or Slayer count?

I see Thinking Plague - Moonsongs listed as 86 & 87 in various places, if it's 86 it certainly makes my list

Camberwell Now - The Ghost Trade (very nice to see this one on another top spot)
Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring
Univers Zero - Heatwave
David Sylvian - Gone to Earth
Mick Karn - Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters
Legendary Pink Dots - Island of Jewels
News From Babel - Letters Home
Gestalt et Jive - s/t
Frank Zappa - Jazz from Hell
Pierre Moerlen's Gong - Breakthrough

The Astor Piazzolla album is brutally good and can even compete with Camberwell Now and the Talk Talk album (that's three top 20 of all time candidates in this year), as is Jorge Reyes - Comala, but these don't qualify according to my "prog is PA plus Irmin Schmidt plus Mick Karn" rule.

 Bubbling under:
Shub-Niggurath - Les Morts Vont Vite
Chick Corea & Elektric Band - Elektric Band
Julverne - Ne Parlons Pas De Malheur
Emerson, Lake & Powell - ELPowell  if it's from 86 (I thought it was 85)

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

I use this same rule, with the added provision that I'll include artists whose submission to the archives is still under consideration, or artists who I'm planning to nominate for inclusion eventually. Hence why The Colour Of Spring and The Moon And The Melodies make my list but not Beauty In The Beast which would otherwise certainly be a contender for the top spot.

I go by my own rules:) so I won't include albums I feel have no place on these lists (mostly a lot of new wave stuff and 70's progbands that went mainstream in the 80's), although represented on PA, but I'll include anything I feel have a place here - such as Beauty in the Beast
